This test on rigid plastics indicates their ability to withstand continuous short-term compression without yielding and loosening when fastened as in insulators or other assemblies by bolts, rivets, etc. It does not indicate the creep resistance of a particular plastic for long periods of time. It is also a measure of rigidity at service temperatures and can be used as identification for procurement. Data should indicate stress level and the temperature of the test. [Pg.316]


Fatigue tests were performed under load control mode on a Schenck horizontal fatigue testing machine with hydraulic grips and a maximum load capacity of 25 kN. Tension-tension constant amplitude fatigue tests were carried out at three stress levels 60% a , 70% Cu and 80% a at two different stress ratios R = 0.1 and R = 0.5. TetrabromobisphenoIA. Tetrabromobisphenol A [79-94-7] (TBBPA) is the largest volume bromiaated flame retardant. TBBPA is prepared by bromination of bisphenol A under a variety of conditions. When the bromination is carried out ia methanol, methyl bromide [74-80-9] is produced as a coproduct (37). If hydrogen peroxide is used to oxidize the hydrogen bromide [10035-10-6] HBr, produced back to bromine, methyl bromide is not coproduced (38). TBBPA is used both as an additive and as a reactive flame retardant. It is used as an additive primarily ia ABS systems, la ABS, TBBPA is probably the largest volume flame retardant used, and because of its relatively low cost is the most cost-effective flame retardant. In ABS it provides high flow and good impact properties. These benefits come at the expense of distortion temperature under load (DTUL) (39). DTUL is a measure of the use temperature of a polymer. TBBPA is more uv stable than decabrom and uv stable ABS resias based oa TBBPA are produced commercially. [Pg.468]

Products. Vibration isolators typically are selected to have a static deflection, under load, that yields a natural frequency no more than one-third the lowest driving frequency that must be isolated (see Eig. 7). The supporting stmcture must have sufficient stiffness so it does not deflect under the load of the supported equipment by more than one-tenth the deflection of the isolator itself (6). Stress Relaxation. Copper alloys are used extensively in appHcations where they are subjected to moderately elevated temperatures while under load. An important example is the spring member for contacts in electrical and electronic coimectors. Critical to rehable performance is the maintenance of adequate contact force, or stabiUty, while in service. Thermal Properties. Thermal properties include heat-deflection temperature (HDT), specific heat, continuous use temperature, thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion, and flammability ratings. Heat-deflection temperature is a measure of the minimum temperature that results in a specified deformation of a plastic beam under loads of 1.82 or 0.46 N/mm (264 or 67 psi, respectively). Eor an unreinforced plastic, this is typically ca 20°C below the glass-transition temperature, T, at which the molecular mobility is altered. Sometimes confused with HDT is the UL Thermal Index, which Underwriters Laboratories estabflshed as a safe continuous operation temperature for apparatus made of plastics (37). Typically, UL temperature indexes are significantly lower than HDTs. Specific heat and thermal conductivity relate to insulating properties. The coefficient of thermal expansion is an important component of mold shrinkage and must be considered when designing composite stmctures. [Pg.264]

EGR can seriously degrade engine performance, especially at idle, under load at low speed, and during cold start. Control of the amount of EGR during these phases can be accompHshed by the same electronic computer controller used in the closed loop oxygen sensor TWC system.
