Susan Solomon and James Anderson showed that CFCs produce chlorine atoms and chlorine oxide under the conditions of the ozone layer and identified the CFCs emanating from everyday objects, such as cans of hair spray, refrigerators, and air conditioners, as the primary culprits in the destruction of stratospheric ozone. The CFC molecules are not very polar, and so they do not dissolve in rain or the oceans. Instead, they rise to the stratosphere, where they are exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. Figure 1 shows the hierarchical tree that corresponds to Table I. The scale at the top of the tree corresponds to the predicted time to failure in months. The conditions at the top of the tree are given by 71 C, 72%, and 8.3 suns and correspond to an expected failure time of approximately 16 months. The first split in the tree is associated with a temperature of 95 C on the left branch and 50 C on the right branch, which correspond to average predicted lifetimes of approximately four and 27 months, respectively. The most stable resin for many of our purposes has proven to be a copolymer of ethyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate. This comes as little surprise the Rohm and Haas Company has for years sold a durable resin based on these two monomers, Acryloid B-72 (6,28). We have also prepared polymers of similar physical properties based on methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate and have found that their behavior is practically the same - the methyl and ethyl groups apparently do not become seriously involved in crosslinking. As reported elsewhere( 23), rather than crosslink, Acryloid B-72 tends to chain break under visible and near-ultraviolet radiation, although at a very slow rate. Millward and Bihan [59] studied the effect of humic material on the determination of mercury by flameless atomic absorption spectrometry. In both fresh and seawater, association between inorganic and organic entities takes place within 90 min at pH values of 7 or above, and the organically bound mercury was not detected by an analytical method designed for inorganic mercury. The amount of detectable mercury was related to the amount of humic material added to the solutions. However, total mercury could be measured after exposure to ultraviolet radiation under strongly acid conditions. [Pg.464]

Acrylic and modacrylic fibers have a wool-like appearance and feel, and excellent resistance to heat, ultraviolet radiation, and chemicals [Bajaj and Kumari, 1987]. These fibers have replaced wool in many applications, such as socks, pullovers, sweaters, and craft yams. Other applications include tenting, awning fabric, and sandbags for rivershore stabilization. The use of acrylic and modacrylic fibers in carpets is low since these materials do not hold up well to recycling through hot-humid conditions. Acitretin is most useful for the treatment of severe psoriasis, particularly the pustular and erythrodermic variants. Psoriatic nail changes and arthritis also may respond. Combining the drug with ultraviolet light therapy (Re-UVB, in the case of ultraviolet B radiation, or Re-PUVA, with psoralen plus ultraviolet A radiation) permits the use of lower doses of both acitretin and ultraviolet radiation.
