The UK Environment Agency deals with over 6000 oil pollution incidents each year. One estimate suggests tliat tlie cheiTtical industry contributes to 50% of all ah pollution witli proportions approximating to sulphur dioxide (36%), carbon dioxide (28%), nitrogen oxides (18%), carbon monoxide (14%) and black smoke (10%). Motor spirit refining is responsible for ca 26% of emissions of volatile organic compounds to the atmosphere. In 1996 there were over 20 000 reports of water pollution incidents with 155 successful prosecutions. 

This is part of the environmental issues series of the UK Environment Agency. The report provides an overview of plastics looking at manufacture, uses and disposal. The aim of the report is to make recommendations on ways to ensure that society s use of plastics is more sustainable in the future.

There is no mention in the annual report that the results of this survey are issued for public consumption, although the environmental review for employees includes a section on environmental reporting in which it states we file publicly available reports with various agencies. Examples include the US Environmental Protection Agency, the UK Environment Agency, the Norwegian SFT. . . and the Irish Environmental Protection Agency. ...
