September 11, 2001 Following massive terrorist attacks against New York and Washington, the FBI dedicated seven thousand of its eleven thousand Special Agents and thousands of FBI support personnel to the PENTTBOM (short for Pentagon, Twin Towers Bombing). 

The amygdala sends axons to the hippocampus and these inputs are believed to enhance the memory that the hippocampus makes of highly charged emotional events. This is why, for example, everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing on September 11, 2001, when the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were destroyed, or, if they are old enough to remember when President John R Kennedy was assassinated. 

In addition, it should be considered that the picture is further complicated by the fact that security solutions require the application of additional socio-technical systems, vulnerable themselves, and which can be used themselves as attack means (cf. attack to the Twin Towers on September 11th, 2001).

A dramatic illustration of the mass of the chemical repository is the catastrophic release of a small proportion of this reservoir that occurred with the tragic destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City on 11 September 2001. In addition to the dreadful loss of life when the Twin Towers were destroyed, the destruction of these two towers resulted in the dispersal of 1.2 million tons of building debris, along with some fraction of the 130 000 gal of PCB-contaminated transformer oil from the two transformers housed in the buildings, and the dispersal of PBDEs contained in the estimated 50 000 personal and 300 main frame computers (Butt et al., 2004). 

Because of the tremendous scope of the Twin Towers disaster, and the fact that there were so few of the physically injured to care for, 9/11 turned out to be primarily a mental health disaster. Experience with such disasters has served only to emphasize the importance of recruiting, screening, and training mental health professionals, paraprofessionals, and volunteers in order to have the personnel necessary to respond to the specific short- and long-term needs of those exposed to the disaster.

On September 11, 2001, two fully-loaded Boeing 747 commercial aircraft were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center. Over 3,000 were killed as the fires inside the twin towers caused the building to collapse. If hydrogen was used as the fuel the damage would have been confined to the immediate crash sites, the buildings would probably be still standing and many lives would have been spared. 

That terrorist groups are willing to injure and kill civilians is, of course, not a new development. On the morning of September n, 2001, some 3000 people died in front of our eyes in a crazy scene of airliners crashing into skyscrapers and of those skyscrapers crumbling within minutes. Anyone downtown in Manhattan that day, or anyone anywhere in front of a television screen who watched the collapse of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, has the memory of it seared into their psyche. The entire appalling event—from Manhattan to the Pentagon to a small field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania—sent political shockwaves across America and around the world that have not yet subsided. We now call that day 9/11 as a signature shorthand for the catastrophe, a logo for an event whose details quickly occupied the mind of nearly everyone on the planet.
