Tungsten trivalent

The only known trivalent tungsten complex is of the type M(I)2(W2Cl2). It is prepared by the reduction of strong hydrochloric acid solutions of K2WO4 with tin. If the reduction is not sufficient, a compound containing tetravalent tungsten, K2(WCl (OH)) [84238-10-0] is formed (57). [Pg.291]

In addition to the successful reductive carbonylation systems utilizing the rhodium or palladium catalysts described above, a nonnoble metal system has been developed (27). When methyl acetate or dimethyl ether was treated with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of an iodide compound, a trivalent phosphorous or nitrogen promoter, and a nickel-molybdenum or nickel-tungsten catalyst, EDA was formed. The catalytst is generated in the reaction mixture by addition of appropriate metallic complexes, such as 5 1 combination of bis(triphenylphosphine)-nickel dicarbonyl to molybdenum carbonyl. These same catalyst systems have proven effective as a rhodium replacement in methyl acetate carbonylations (28). Though the rates of EDA formation are slower than with the noble metals, the major advantage is the relative inexpense of catalytic materials. Volumetric methods for determining columbium are rapid and fairly satisfactory since tantajum does not interfere. But tungsten, molybdenum, and titanium must be completely removed. The methods depend on the reduction of pentavalent columbium to the trivalent condition by means of zinc, then the oxidation by standard permanganate. Taylor s method3 makes the reduction in a Jones reductor and the titration in an atmosphere of C02. Cluster anions, and their complexes with di- and trivalent transition metals thought to be based on XWii have been shown to be dimeric, based on structural studies of the salts of [Sb2W22074(0H)2] (40) and related species. The structure of this anionic cluster is shown in Figure 34, and comprises two B-/3-XW9 groups linked by two other tungsten atoms.
