Tuned liquid damper

Passive control devices are devices that do not require power to operate. Examples of passive devices are base isolation, tuned mass dampers (TMD), tuned liquid dampers (TLD), metallic yield dampers, viscous fluid dampers, and... [Pg.2]

Other devices that could be classified as passive dampers include tuned mass and tuned liquid dampers. [Pg.393]

TLDs (Tuned Liquid Damper systems) dissipate energy using a secondary mass in the form of a body of liquid introduced into the structural system and tuned in such a way to act as a dynamic vibration absorber. TLDs are particularly effective for the suppression of lateral vibrations (e.g., due to wind or pedestrial loads) and were used for vibration control of the Toda Park Bridge in Japan. Similar devices to TLDs are TSDs (Tuned Sloshing Dampers) and TLCDs (Tuned Liquid Column Dampers). [Pg.542]

Another important issue is the control of the pylons during erection and also during the cable spinning, since their frequency varies significantly in that phase. The use of passive dampers (mostly Tuned Liquid Dampers) proves to be ineffective since they have to be constantly tuned to the new pylon configuration. In the past 20 years, this problem has been dealt with the implementation of active and hybrid control strategies. This is a particularly consolidated practice in Japan, with several cases reported... [Pg.542]
