Sheet filter

Inorganic membranes are made of mainly ceramic and metallic materials. The ceramic ones are manufactured from a variety of materials including alumina, zirconia, titania and silica. The substrate (to give the thin membrane mechanical rigidity and strength) is either the same material as the membrane but with a larger pore structure, or a different material such as silicon carbide. [Pg.112]

Plate pr esses. Sometimes called sheet filters, these are assemblies of plates, sheets of filter media, and sometimes screens or frames. Thev are essentially modified filter presses with practically no cakeholding capacity. A press may consist of many plates or of a single filter sheet between two plates, the plates may be rectangular or circular, and the sheets may lie in a horizontal or vertical plane. The operation is similar to that of a filter press, and the flow rates are about the same as for disk filters. The operating pressure usually does not exceed 138 kPa (20 psig). The presses are used most frequently for low-viscosity liqmds, but an ordinaiy filter press with thin frames is commonly used as a clarifier for 100-Pa s (1000-P) rayon-spinning solution. Here the filtration pressure may be 6900 kPa (1000 psig). [Pg.1719]

In the meantime, mount the glass fiber filters on top of the filter sheet in the dot-blot filtration unit (Schleicher and Schuell). For duplicate determinations, two samples each of 45 pi solution are spotted on separate filters. [Pg.34]

Thus the filtration resistivity of the medium includes its thickness. Typical measured values of Rf are of the order of 10lom-1 for comparison, the fine filter sheet of Table 1.6, assuming it to be 1 mm thick, has LIKP =0.001/0.15(1(T12) = 0.7(1010) m1. [Pg.313]

The operation of filter sheets is based on three factors ... [Pg.228]

Adsorption effect microorganisms and suspended particles are retained on the fibres of the filter sheets because of differences in electric charges. [Pg.228]

Before a sheet filter is used for the first time, the filter sheets should be rinsed for about 15 min with water, to make sure that the product does not have any off-flavour due to the sheets (paper or diatomaceous earth flavour). For this rinsing operation the flow rate should be high and the filter sheet pack should not be tightened. [Pg.228]

PRECOAT FILTRATION - DIATOMACEOUS EARTH FILTRATION. The mOSt economical method of filtering fruit juices with a high suspended solids content is with precoat filters. In these, the filter sheet is created by precoating a liquid-permeable filtering element with the filter aid. In addition to diatomaceous earth, perlite and cellulose are also used as filter aids in fruit juice production. [Pg.229]

A major alternative to direct flow membrane filtration is depth filtration, in which particles are removed throughout the filtration matrix rather than just at the membrane surface, by various mechanisms such as size exclusion, electrostatic, and hydrophobic interactions. Depth filters are typically composed of a bed of cellulose or polypropylene fibers together with an inorganic filter aid such as diatomaceous earth and a binder to form a filter sheet. The filter aid imparts the matrix very high surface areas and plays an important role in increasing both retention and the capacity. Depth filters can also have an electrostatic charge usually associated with the binder polymer. [Pg.411]

Two filtration methods can be used for the final filtration of bright beer depth filtration, which uses filter sheets or pads, and membrane filtration. [Pg.572]

Sheet filter media for depth filtration are typically made from cellulose fibers and diatomaceous earths compressed into a thin mat. These sheets are typically mounted in plate and frame filters. There are also some special filters available that consist of filter sheet discs stacked and sealed in modules, which fit in closed filter vessels. The filter sheets can be regenerated several times until they need to be (manually) replaced. [Pg.572]

Solasodine glycosides were applied to TLC plates and developed with chloroform-methanol-ammonia solution (7 2.5 1). A developed TLC plate was dried and then sprayed with blotting solution mixture of isopropanol-methanol-water (5 20 40, by volume). It was placed on a stainless-steel plate, then covered with a PVDF membrane sheet. After covering with a glass microfiber filter sheet, the whole plate was pressed evenly for 45 s with a 130°C iron, as previously described [11], but with a modification. The PVDF membrane was separated from the plate and dried. [Pg.1630]

The sample passes through a 0.4-/xm Nuclepore (Pleasanton, Calif.) filter bag placed in a tubulated polyethylene container. The filter bags are made from 142-mm filters or, if a larger surface area is needed, by heat-sealing rectangles cut from 8X 10-in. Nuclepore filter sheets. A small bead of silicone rubber is applied to the filter holder cap to make the filter assembly leak-tight. The first Chelex column removes the trace metals from the seawater. The second Chelex column is used as an analytical blank to correct for any salt matrix effects from the first column. [Pg.18]

Combine, using a glass support, a stack of wiping cloths (four times the thickness of the gel), two 3MM filter sheets wetted in denaturation buffer, a wetted nylon membrane cut to the size of the gel and the agarose gel. Nitrocellulose membranes are not recommended for this procedure. [Pg.212]

General System requires odd number of filter sheet pairs. [Pg.32]

Materials from starch crosslinked with melamine-formaldehyde, methylated melamine-formaldehyde, and other amine-aldehyde resins were patented as binders for filter paper,1336 milk filter sheet materials,1338 and aqueous papercoating compositions containing clay, titanium(IV) oxide, butadiene-styrene latex, and calcium octadecanoate.1396,1397 Foams for filters were developed.1398 A heatsetting adhesive was one of the first applications reported for starch crosslinked by urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins.1331,1340-1342,1347,1372,1399... [Pg.235]

The cellulose used in filtering wines is in fiber form, and is commercially available as filter sheets or powder. The latter may be used alone or mixed with other filter media to prepare precoats. [Pg.339]

The properties of flat-sheet filters may be defined (Section 11.4.1) by a nominal cutoff expressed in ftm. It is also possible to determine the maximnm quantity of microorganisms in suspension likely to be retained per cm of filter surface under specified operating conditions. Bacteria are mnch less efficiently trapped than yeast cells. The flow rate of the finest sterilizing filter sheets is naturally lower than that of clarifying sheets and they are also more snsceptible to clogging. [Pg.351]

The heterogeneity of the filter sheets makes it impossible to obtain a direct result for sheet filtration, so the fouling index measurement on membranes (Section 11.8.3) may be used. Wines... [Pg.353]
