Tropospheric pollution, global concern

Clouds cover roughly two-thirds of our earth s surface and play an important role in influencing global climate by affecting the radiation budget. Cirrus clouds are one example of a cloud type whose optical properties are not accurately known. Cirrus clouds form in the upper troposphere and are composed almost exclusively of non-spherical ice crystal particles. The impact of cloud coverage on dispersion of pollution in the atmosphere is an area of great concern and intensive study. 

Of the six heavy metals discussed in this chapter, Pb has been studied extensively with respect to the environmental effects. Clair Patterson, the father of environmental Pb studies, in one of his many major publications concerning the global Pb cycle (Patterson and Settle, 1987), noted that during pre-industrial times Pb in the troposphere originated from soil dusts and volcanic gases. In modern times (1950-1980) the proportion of natural Pb in the atmosphere is overwhelmed by the industrial sources of smelter emissions and automobile exhausts. Lead air pollution levels measured near our Nation s roadways decreased 97% between 1976 and 1995 due to the consequence of the Clean Air Act that eliminated leaded gasoline which interfered with the performance of catalytic converters. 

Because PAN is in thermal equilibrium with NO2 and the peroxyacetyl radical, it can act as a means of transporting these more reactive species over long distances. The NO2 released by thermal decomposition of PAN is photolyzed rapidly in the troposphere to form O3 by Reaction 19.1 and Reaction 19.2. Ozone is a criteria air pollutant and is a major health concern. Thus, the PANs play important roles as a chemical means of transporting key species such as NO2 and formaldehyde to remote locations. As such, PANs are globally important atmospheric molecules, as well as urban air pollutants. Since the original observation of PANs in Los Angeles photochemical smog, PANs have been measured in every corner of the world. 

The global system Earth-atmosphere is the seat of complicated exchange of matter between the stratosphere, the troposphere, the Earth s biosphere, the sea s biosphere and the lithosphere. Uncertainties in much of the data do not allow the global cycle of carbon to be correctly established today. The best known facts concern the atmosphere. The troposphere is fed by pollutants of natural origin resulting from the respiration and oxidation of the biomass, from the oceans (300 Mt NaCl per year) and from volcanoes (10 Mt HCl per year), for example.
