Global concerns

The manufacture of flexible PU foam (PUF) results in the emission of a variety of compounds, including TDI. There have been several concerted efforts to quantify TDI emissions from PUF manufacturing processes. While many measurement methods have been used to quantify TDI emissions, most of these methods have not been validated to establish their suitability for the quantification of TDI emissions from PUF processes. To properly address the global concern about the health effects of TDI emissions, reliable emission data, based on validated measurement techniques, are required. TDI emission measurements are typically made using adaptations of... [Pg.85]

Right) New ways to garden Organic methods address global concerns such as water conservation—promoting, for example, new ornamental plant choices and moisture-conserving mulches to make best use of the soil s resources. [Pg.13]

Overall it can be concluded that BPA exposure is a global concern and that almost the entire population is exposed. In some studies, a gender difference was observed. When such a difference was seen, men usually had higher unadjusted BPA concentrations than female while female had higher creatinine adjusted BPA... [Pg.276]

Global concerns have been raised in recent years over the potential adverse effects that may result from exposure to chemicals that have the potential to interfere with the endocrine system. WUdlife and human health effects of endocrine dismpting chemicals (EDCs) were first proclaimed by Rachel Carson in 1962, and based on a growing body of knowledge those concerns have increased. This concern regarding EDCs is directed at both humans and wildlife (WHO/IPCS 2002). [Pg.188]

Exposure to heavy metals in the industrial environment has caused global concern, because several substances have been shown to cause severe adverse effects among workers and children. This situation requires proper training and monitoring by associated agencies worldwide. [Pg.80]

Pesticides are toxic chemicals. Organochlorinated pesticides, because of their high persistence, have been identified in tissues of animals and humans. Insecticides (e.g., DDT and heptachlor) have been found in the milk and body fluids of humans and have caused global concern. Proper care and disposal of organochlorinated pesticides by qualified and trained workers under proper management is the answer to achieve human safety and to contain chemical toxicity. [Pg.116]

Different metals and metal compounds have been in use since the beginning of human civilization. Metals include aluminum, antimony, cobalt, copper, chromium, iron, nickel, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, tin, vanadium, and zinc. The list of toxic metals includes but is not limited to arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, lead, and mercury. Contamination of food, water, and the air by metals, particularly lead and cadmium, has caused global concern. Several studies have shown elevated levels of lead, nickel, chromium, and manganese in children s hair. [Pg.6]

Snicide deaths and impnlsive acts of self-harm associated with pesticides have cansed increasing global concern. It has been reported that deliberate ingestion associated with pesticides has resnlted in 2-3 million hospital admissions and about 220,000 deaths each year. In recent years, pesticides have been used in a spate of suicides in some parts of India (Andhra Pradesh). Pest resistance and resurgence (mainly on cotton crops) and abuse of pesticides because of lack of strict market regulation of toxic chemicals like pesticides have been found to be the causative factors of human poisonings. [Pg.120]

Plutonium represents a dual challenge because it is a valuable energy source and a matter of global concern because of its potential health hazards and possible use for the production of nuclear weapons. [Pg.333]
