The properties of triglycerides depend on the fatty acid composition and on the relative location of fatty acids on the glycerol. As accurate methods for determining the composition are available, several conventions have been developed to specify arrangements of fatty acids on the glycerol molecule. Natural fats and oils are designated as the triglyceride type in terms of saturated and unsaturated acids and isomeric forms. [Pg.92]

GS3 in the table refers to a fully saturated glyceride and GS2U refers to a glyceride composed of two saturated acids and one unsaturated acid. Familial Combined Hyperlipidemia About 10% to 15% of patients with premature CHD actually have familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCHL). This disorder is recognized as a distinct phenotype by studying family members of survivors of myocardial infarction. Patients with FCHL can have increased plasma concentrations of total and LDL cholesterol (type Ila), or triglyceride (type IV), or both (type lib). In all cases, apo B-lOO concentrations are increased. The presentation of lipoprotein patterns can vary in an individual with time. Furthermore, patients with hypertriglyceridemia with normal partners tend to have offspring with hypercholesterolemia, and vice versa. [Pg.929]

Diuretics, such as those of the thiazide type, have been the cornerstone of first-line antihypertensive treatments for decades. In addition to having the required spedfidty, lipases employed as catalysts for modification of triglycerides must be stable and active under the reaction conditions used. Lipases are usually attached to supports (ie they are immobilised). Catalyst activity and stability depend, therefore, not only on the lipase, but also the support used for its immobilisation. Interesterification reactions are generally run at temperatures up to 70°C with low water availability. While the fibric acid derivatives have antihyperlipidemic effects, their use varies depending on the drug. For example, Clofibrate (Atromid-S) and gemfibrozil (Lopid) are used to treat individuals with very high serum triglyceride levels who present a risk of abdominal pain and pancreatitis and who do not experience a response to diet modifications. Clofibrate is not used for the treatment of other types of hyperlipidemia and is not thought to be effective for prevention of coronary heart disease. The application of microemulsions in foods is limited by the types of surfactants used to facilitate microemulsion formation. Many surfactants are not permitted in foods or only at low levels.
