Liver. Male B6C3Fi mice, four weeks of age, received a single intraperitoneal injection of 80 mg/kg bw TV-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) in tricaprylin. Two weeks later, the mice were fed diets containing 0, 3000, 6000 or 12 000 ppm di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate for up to six months. Groups of 10 mice were killed at two, four and six months after NDEA treatment. Few hepatocellular foci were seen at two, four or six months in mice treated with NDEA alone or di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate alone, while numerous foci and neoplasms were seen in mice given di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate after NDEA. No tumours were found at six months in mice receiving NDEA alone. By the end of the study, the number of foci per unit volume of liver was similar in mice at all doses of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, but there was an increase in the volume of the foci (0, 1.4, 0.6, 9.4 mm for the control, 3000-, 6000- and 12 000-ppm groups, respectively) (Ward et al., 1983). 

In the second mouse lung adenoma assay, cinnamyl anthranilate was administered to 15 females and 15 males under similar experimental conditions, except that redistilled tricaprylin was used as the vehicle. The control group consisted of 80 females and 80 males. The numbers of tumours per mouse were increased at the high dose, being 0.85 0.23 (p < 0.01) in high-dose females, 1.40 0.36 p < 0.001) in high-dose males, 0.54 0.15 (p < 0.05) in low-dose females and 0.47 0.12 in low-dose males compared with 0.20 0.02 in control females and 0.24 0.03 in control males (Stoner etal., 1973). 

D,L-Diepoxybutane and /wcAso-diepoxybutanc induced skin papillomas and squamous-cell carcinomas when applied to the skin of female Swiss mice at a dose of approximately 3 or 10 mg in 100 mg acetone three times per week for life (Van Duuren et al., 1963, 1965). Subcutaneous injection of 0.1 mg D,L-diepoxybutane in 0.05 mL tricaprylin once per week for more than one year induced local fibrosarcomas in female Swiss mice no tumour was observed in three solvent-treated control groups. Similar findings were seen in female Sprague-Dawley rats (Van Duuren et al., 1966). 

L-Diepoxybutane was administered by intraperitoneal injection (12 injections thrice weekly) to male and female strain A mice at total doses ranging from 1.7 to 192 mg/kg bw in water or tricaprylin. It increased the incidence and multiplicity of lung tumours (Shimkin et al., 1966).

They studied the effect of the mass detectors drift tube temperature on the low-molecular-mass TGs. Solutions of 10 mg/ml of tributyrin, tricaproin, tricaprylin, tricaprin, and trilaurin were injected twice at each of the following drift tube temperatures 20,25, 30,45, and 60°C. Five replications of the HPLC analysis were performed for one sample of ewe s milk fat to determine the reproducibility of the HPLC method. The TG composition was estimated in accordance with the method based on the calculation of the equivalent carbon numbers (ECNs) of the HPLC chromatographic peaks and in the molar composition in fatty acids, analyzed by GLC, collected at the HPLC chromatograph outlet. The HPLC fractions were collected every 40 s at the outlet of the column after 14 min there were no peaks before that time.

Hyde et al. (24) found that the peak apparent viscosity of lamellar liquid crystal fell by about two orders of magnitude as alcohol chain length was reduced from 15 to five in water-alcohol-Teepol systems. However, the complete picture of how various types of amphiphilic compounds and their mixtures influence viscosity is not available. In particular, it is not known under what conditions fairly low viscosities of liquid crystals can be achieved although Hallstrom and Friberg (22) report viscosities of about 0.2 poise for some compositions in the water— monocaprylin-tricaprylin system. As indicated previously, low viscosities increase the possibilities for occurrence of hydrodynamic instabilities involving cellular convection.

It is also possible to shift the equilibrium of the reaction by removing the formed reaction products (according to the Le Chatelier s principle) (162). For example, the ability to remove water in continuous esterification reactions in SCCO2 has been cited as one of the advantages of using SCCO2 versus traditional solvents, such as hexane (163). In their study on the interesterification of tricaprylin and methyl oleate in SCCO2, Adschiri et al. (164) concluded that the selective extraction of the reaction product, methyl caprylate shifted the equilibrium of the reaction forward.
