The best known of these defoliants are sodium chlorate which has the danger of starting fires, tributyl-phosphorotrithioite (merphos, Folex) its oxygenated relative tributylphosphorotri-thioite (DEF), and endothall (Accelerate). Recent research reports claim that amino methyl phosphonic acid and certain of its relatives were found to be more active than current commercial products. The best known desiccant used for defoliation of cotton is paraquat (1,1 -dimethyl-4,4 -bipyridinium) (8). 

At Bolton, we also have attempted to introduce volatile and possible vapor phase-active, phosphorus-based FR components in back-coating formulations.60 62 The selected FRs included tributyl phosphate (TBP), a monomeric cyclic phosphate Antiblaze CU (Rhodia Specialties) and the oligomeric phosphate-phosphonate Fyrol 51 (Akzo). When combined with an intumescent char-forming pentaerythritol (PER) derivative (NH1197, Chemtura) and applied as a back-coating on to cotton and polypropylene substrates, significant improvements in overall flame retardancy were observed. 

Phosphates were analysed by Hashizume and Sasaki [586,587] in the form of their TMS esters, which were prepared by reaction with HMDS-TMCS in pyridine. Mono-, di-and tributyl phosphates were silylated by the same reagent, but diethyl ether was used instead of pyridine [588]. The most powerful silylating agent for alkyl phosphonates is BSTFA with the addition of TMCS [589]. Phosphonate (1 mg) was dissolved in 0.1 ml of acetonitrile, 0.1 ml of BSTFA and 0.05 ml of TMCS. The derivatization was completed at room temperature after 15 min and an aliquot of the reaction mixture was injected directly into the chromatograph, 1% of SE-30 or OV-17 at 90-170°C was used as the stationary phase.

Polyphosphines can be made by reduction of a phosphonous dihalide with a metal such as Li, Na, Mg or Hg, or with lithium aluminium hydride (6.680). They are also obtained on heating a phosphonous dihalide with tributyl phosphine (6.681), or triethyl stibine (6.682), or simply heating a phosphonous difluoride in a sealed tube (6.515). 

Phosphorinane (phosphinane), (CH2)5PH, mp = 19°C, bp = 118-121°C, can be made by the route indicated in scheme (6.809) starting with 1 5 dibromopentane and tributyl phosphite. This leads first, via an Arbusov-type reaction, to the butyl ester of 5-bromopentyl phosphonic acid, which, when treated with magnesium bromide, yields the cyclic ester, which in turn is hydrolysed by boiling acid to give 1-hydroxyphosphorinane 1-oxide. This latter compound can then be reduced with diphenylsilane. 

More recently, a PVC ISE based on the [4-(l,l,3,3-tetramethylbutyl) phenyl] phosphate/decan-l-ol system in conjunction with a chemometric technique has facilitated magnesium measurements (35). Attempts to make magnesium sensors with magnesium adducts of poly(propylene glycol) in conjunction with tributyl phosphate, di-octylphenyl phosphonate, its 3-nitrophenyl derivative, 2-nitroethyl benzene and 2-nitrophenyl phenyl ether solvents produced instead calcium sensors with = 0.06-0.08. 

Many representatives of the trialkyl orthophosphate ester, dialkyl alkyl (or aryl) phosphonate ester, alkyl dialkyl (or diaryl)-phosphinate, and trialkyl (or triaryl) phosphine oxide class have been investigated. Judging from the reviews available, none of the more exotic types appears to offer any particular advantage over tributyl orthophosphate as a selective extractant for resolving lanthanide mixtures. Most are either viscous liquids or solids that require a diluent, and for the most part the individual separation factors to be had are unspectacular.
