Trees burnt

Light from the White Sun pours down upon the crystal tower, which, like a prism, transmits it outward to the land of Logres. As you watch, the mists of enchantment that have always clung to the kingdom are burnt away. The trees put forth blossom the rivers, lakes, and streams sparkle the fields prosper and all the inhabitants of your kingdom are blessed with peace. 

Wood ashes.—The ash of wood, not coal, contains about 30 per cent, of potassium carbonate. Prior to the exploitation of the Stassfurt salts about the middle of the nineteenth century, the chief source of potash was wood ashes, and the process is still used in certain localities where wood-fuel is employed and where much waste wood is available—e.g. in some parts of Canada, United States, Russia, Spain, etc. The ash of trees, hedge-cuttings, sawdust, etc., can be made to yield potash.5 In the Caucasus, the sunflower is grown on waste land for the sake of its seed. The stalks, leaves, etc., are a by-product and are burnt the ash is used as a source of potash. Nearly 7000 tons per annum of crude potash from this source were exported from Novorossik in Russia. The residues in the manufacture of olive oil and almond shells are also stated by G. l Abate to be exceptionally rich in potash salts F. W. F. Day claims that the roots of the water hyacinth (eiehornia crassipes) have... 

Usage It is wrapped in the leaf of the betel pepper ( Piper chavica betel ) and sprinkled with burnt lime, catechu gum from the Malayan acacia tree ( Acacia catechu ) and nutmeg, cardamom or other species. This morsel is placed in the mouth and sucked on for several hours.

The areca nut or betel nut is the fruit of Areca catechu L., a palm tree of the far East. The nut is consumed in large quantities by the natives. Adams (74) describes a limestone quarry at Getembe, near Kandy, Ceylon, from which the quarried stone is burnt and the resulting quicklime when slaked is all sold to the Singhalese to mix with ground areca nuts. The mixture is wrapped in betel leaves Piper belle L.) and chewed by the natives. 

A windowless room has a switch and two light bulbs. Develop a fault tree for the undesired or top fault event "dark room" (i.e., room without light). Assume that the room can only be dark if the switch fails to close, both the light bulbs have burnt out, or there is no electricity. A fault tree for this example is shown in Figure 4.3. The single capital letters in the diagram denote corresponding fault events (e.g.. A fuse failure, F no electricity, and T dark room). 

A tree is mainly composed of wood (65 to 90 % dry weight) but contains about 50 % water which must be evaporated when fresh samples are burnt. In general, the combustion heat of bone-dry wood amounts to about -19 MJ/kg but may increase to -25 MJ/kg when resins or other high energy compounds are present in the specimen. The combustion heat decreases to only -10 to -12 MJ/kg for wet wood since a high portion of energy is consumed for evaporation. Air dried wood keeps approximately 20 % water so that -16 MJ/kg may be expected [3,80,81].
