Transposable element

There are wide variations in features of individual chromosomes (eg, in gene number per Mb, SNP density, GC content, numbers of transposable elements and CpG islands, recombination rate). [Pg.636]

The target gene is markedwith yellow, transposon is blue and the shuttle vector is indicated with a circle. The vector delivering the transposon will be eliminated after the random insertion of the transposable element. Insertion of the transposon inactivates the target gene function this can be corrected via introduction of the gene on a vector (complementation). [Pg.20]

The methylation of DNA at CpG islands has also turned out to be an important regulator for cell development, the differentiated proteome and the regulation of cell survival [237,238]. Indeed the implications of this chemical modification have been linked to DNA accessibility, chromatin fluidity and cell transformation [239,240]. DNA methylation is required for genomic stability and believed to act as an inert epigenetic marker in germinal cells and preimplantation embryos [238]. Presumably, DNA methylation is required for the heritable transmission of chromatin structure, which prevents the expression of terminally silenced genes in differentiated tissues, and provides a host-defense mechanism against parasitic transposable elements [241]. [Pg.259]

The last group of transposable elements is the DNA transposons that resemble bacterial transposons. They tend to have short life spans within a species. Humans have at least seven families of DNA transposons. Their replication is lessened by the presence of inactive copies, so as the inactive copies accumulate, transposition becomes less efficient. [Pg.340]

These substances resemble 3-lactam molecules (Figure 43-7) but they have very weak antibacterial action. They are potent inhibitors of many but not all bacterial 3 lactamases and can protect hydrolyzable penicillins from inactivation by these enzymes. -Lactamase inhibitors are most active against Ambler class A lactamases (plasmid-encoded transposable element [ ] lactamases in particular), such as those produced by staphylococci, H influenzae, N gonorrhoeae, salmonella, shigella, E coli, and pneumoniae. They are not good inhibitors of class lactamases, which typically are chromosomally encoded and inducible, produced by enterobacter, citrobacter, serratia, and pseudomonas, but they do inhibit chromosomal 3 lactamases of bacteroides and moraxella. [Pg.993]

Following the discovery of the IS elements it was found that transposable elements named transposons could transfer resistance to antibiotics between bacteria. All of these transposable elements have inverted repeat sequences at the ends. For example, IS1 contains the following sequence at both ends but with opposite orientation as if in a... [Pg.1574]

Enzymes that catalyze the synthesis of DNA using an RNA template are known as reverse transcriptases. The first reverse transcriptase discovered was encoded by an RNA retrovirus. This enzyme is needed in the virus replication cycle. Some animal viruses pass through an RNA intermediate and also require a reverse transcriptase to replicate the viral DNA. Similarly, a number of transposable elements found in cellular chromosomes replicate through RNA intermediates they usually encode a reverse transcriptase. A unique reverse transcriptase called telomerase is used to synthesize the DNA at the ends of linear eukaryotic chromosomes. [Pg.674]
