Ozone data collected by CASTNET are complementary to the larger ozone data sets gathered by the State and Local Air Monitoring Stations (SLAMS) and National Air Monitoring Stations (NAMS) networks. Most air-quality samples at SLAMS/NAMS sites are located in urban areas, while CASTNET sites are in rural locations. Hourly ozone measurements are taken at each of the 50 sites operated by EPA. Data from these sites provide information to help characterize ozone transport issues and ozone exposure levels. [Pg.11]

The Bureau of Transport Economics and Statistics of the Interstate Commerce Commission is responsible for the freight statistics on commodities which can be used in various ways by the chemical industry. Since 1947, the bureau has had data, on a sample basis, of terminated traffic by commodity breakdowns. Issued quarterly, the Group V statistics titled Manufactures and Miscellaneous include numerous chemicals and chemical products. Number of carloads and tons are reported for Class I steam railways in the United States. Although no longer published, the state statistics by origination, destination, and commodity were useful data. Collection and publication of these figures were discontinued in January 1952. [Pg.6]

A useful source of data on the safety record of the transportation of expls is the Office of Hazardous Materials News, Office of the Secretary, Department of Transportation, Washington, DC. A European collection of data on industry connected accidents is said to have been collected by Dr Karl Trautzl (Ref 44). The Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board has issued two series of publications (Ref 26). The first are the proceedings of the Annual Explosives Safety Seminars. The second publication series are the abstracts of expl accidents. These reports are submitted voluntarily by both government and industry and are complete with descriptions of causes, damage and casualties. The standard operating procedure (SOP) manual contains the procedures validated by the laboratory it is a complete set of instructions for pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical methodology and also procedures for quality assurance/control, chain-of-custody and security. Each step in the handling of the specimen should be evaluated, optimized where possible and documented in the SOP. Important steps in the analytical process include collection, transport and accessioning of the specimen, sample preparation, isolation and detection of the analytes, production of the report and disposal of the specimen.
