Utilization of LPG as motor fuel represents only a tiny fraction of the market, on the order of 30,000 t/an in France out of a total 3,000,000 t that is, about 1%. Globally, the fraction of LPG used in the transportation industry is on the order of 5% the other applications are essentially petrochemicals (25%) and the heating fuel sectors (70%). However noticeable openings in the LPG-fuel markets in some countries such as Japan (1.8 Mt), the United States (1.3 Mt), the Netherlands (0.9 Mt), Italy (0.8 Mt) and in certain regions (Latin America, Africa, and the Far East) have been observed for specialized vehicles such as taxis. [Pg.230]

Friction Materials. PhenoHc friction materials are made from mol ding compounds developed to meet the extraordinary demands required by friction elements in the transportation industries. Friction materials are used for brake linings, clutch facings, and transmission bands. A moderately high coefficient of friction, which is temperature-independent, is needed. In addition, the material must be high in strength, low in wear and abrasion, and resistant to moisture and hydrauHc fluids. [Pg.305]

In more recent years, molded flexible foam products are becoming more popular. The bulk of the molded flexible urethane foam is employed in the transportation industry, where it is highly suitable for the manufacture of seat cushions, back cushions, and bucket-seat padding. TDI prepolymers were used in flexible foam mol ding ia conjunction with polyether polyols. The introduction of organotin catalysts and efficient siHcone surfactants faciHtates one-shot foam mol ding, which is the most economical production method. [Pg.348]

A variety of applications exist for liquid, 100% solid adhesives, (An adhesive is considered 100% solid if there is no solvent in the adhesive.) Some of the largest uses include structural wood adhesives and adhesives used for the transportation industry, such as windshield adhesives and those used for bonding composite sidewalls of a recreational vehicle (RV). Structural wood adhesives are often made of a polymeric MDI with functionality of approximately 2.7 or higher. Rigid assemblies often utilize polymeric MDI, whereas flexible adhesive assemblies will more often utilize pure MDI, a solid waxy material that melts at around 37°C, or a modified MDI , i.e., MDI that has been modified to make it a liquid at room temperature. Prepolymers are made with ratios of anywhere from NCO/OH = 1.6 to 3.0 or higher. [Pg.782]

The aerospace field is a broad one and has a complex history. A comprehensive review of structural adhesive applications on currently flying aerospace vehicles alone could fill its own book. Hence this chapter will concentrate on the aerospace commercial transport industry and its use of adhesives in structural applications, both metallic and composite. Both primary structure, that is structure which carries primary flight loads and failure of which could result in loss of vehicle, and secondary structure will be considered. Structural adhesives use and practice in the military aircraft and launch vehicle/spacecraft fields as well as non-structural adhesives used on commercial aircraft will be touched on briefly as well. [Pg.1129]

Maleic anhydride is important as a chemical hecause it polymerizes with other monomers while retaining the double bond, as in unsaturated polyester resins. These resins, which represent the largest end use of maleic anhydride, are employed primarily in fiber-reinforced plastics for the construction, marine, and transportation industries. Maleic anhydride can also modify drying oils such as linseed and sunflower. [Pg.243]

Materials are central not only in the transportation industry but even in electronics. The rate of progress in hardware is determined by materials and their processing. Nothing in the laws of nature that says that we cannot build a device that is about 700 atom diameters wide. In fact, we have built devices smaller than these and they all operate well. But this achievement was a laboratory demonstration. To manufacture these devices, we need a steady advance across a broad front of materials processing, new tools and techniques, and materials properties. [Pg.26]

In general the transportation industry in the United States has been backward. Recently, however, a number of changes have been attempted. The result has been many labor-saving innovations that could affect costs drastically. [Pg.30]

But transportation also constitutes an industry in itself, providing jobs and actively contributing to economic growth. In the USA, transport industries contributed roughly 4% to employment and 6% to production in 2002. In Europe, the figures are somewhat higher a contribution of 6.5% to employment and 10% to production is... [Pg.565]

Several years ago research was undertaken to use oleochemicals to build up matrices for natural fiber reinforced plastics [9]. The use of natural fibers, such as flax, hemp, sisal, and yucca is of increasing interest for various applications, among them the automotive and public transportation industries, where the com-... [Pg.79]

In the transportation industry, there is an ever increasing use in auto, truck and bus applications. The advent of the electric vehicle, which may demand vastly improved weight reduction over today s state-of-the-art vehicles, would be a natural extension of current unsaturated polyester resin technologies. [Pg.712]

The increase in oil demand is principally projected in the transport industry because that market is mainly dominated by this primary energy source, and at present, there are no alternative fuels available in a large-scale way for its replacement. [Pg.18]

Another approach to exploit the properties of nanocarbons consists in integrating them in standard fiber-reinforced polymer composites (FRPC). The rationale behind this route is to form a hierarchical composite, with the nanocarbon playing a role at the nanoscale and the macroscopic fiber providing mainly mechanical reinforcement. This strategy typically aims to give FRPCs added functionality, improve their interlaminar properties and increase the fiber surface area. The first two properties are critical for the transport industry, for example, where the replacement of structural metallic... [Pg.235]

Environmental concerns have been raised in recent years dealing with greenhouse gases produced from the transportation industry. A contributing cause of these emissions is the combustion of fossil fuels such as diesel, gasoline and oil. A strong enviromnental initiative has pushed for the development of alternative fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel in pure and blended forms (Demirbas, 2008). [Pg.264]
