Transparent Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide can also be produced with a primary particle size of 10-30 nm, and hence shows transparent properties. Microcrystalline titanium dioxide was first mentioned in Japanese patents in 1978. 

Microfine TiOz can be obtained mainly with rutile structure by different manufacturing routes which depend on starting materials used  

The process steps include precipitation, neutralisation, filtration and washing, drying and micronisation (see Section 2.1 for details of Ti02 production). Due to its small particle size the transparent titanium dioxide has a high photoactivity. To 

Microfine TiOz with predominant anatase structure can also be manufactured by reductive flame hydrolysis of TiCl4 at 700°C [5.287]  

Trade names include Titanium Dioxide P 25 (Degussa, Germany), Hombitec RM Series (Sachtleben Chemie, Germany) and Micro Titanium Dioxide MT-Series (Tayca, Japan). Transparent titanium dioxide is also produced by Ishihara (Japan) and Kemira Oy (Finnland). 

Transparent titanium dioxide exists in both rutile and anatase forms. The average primary particle size (uncoated) ranges from 8 to 25 nm. The specific surface area has values between 80 and 200 m g h Typical applications are  

Transparent titanium dioxide can be manufactured by various wet-chemical and gas-phase processes. The properties of the reaction products can vary greatly, depending on the reaction conditions and starting materials. To reduce the high photochemical activity of untreated transparent titanium dioxides, the pigments are coated with a variety of inorganic oxide combinations (e.g. of silicon, aluminum and zirconium oxides) [5.195].

Glycerin is added as an emollient and texture enhancer. Sorbitol is another emollient that is often used along with glycerin because it makes the soap more transparent. Titanium dioxide is added to make the soap opaque.
