In situ UV-visible spectroscopy monitors the energy of electrons within the analyte. While, strictly speaking, all materials change their UV-visible spectrum in accompaniment with electrode reactions (they are said to be electrochromic), the majority of these changes are not discernible by the human eye, and therefore may not be useful to the analyst. Electrodes must be optically transparent for in situ work, with the most commonly used being a thin film of the semiconductor, indium-tin oxide, on glass. [Pg.274]

Emulsions made by agitation of pure immiscible liquids are usually very unstable and break within a short time. Therefore, a surfactant, mostly termed emulsifier, is necessary for stabilisation. Emulsifiers reduce the interfacial tension and, hence, the total free energy of the interface between two immiscible phases. Furthermore, they initiate a steric or an electrostatic repulsion between the droplets and, thus, prevent coalescence. So-called macroemulsions are in general opaque and have a drop size > 400 nm. Generally speaking a microemulsion is formed when a micellar solution is in contact with hydrocarbon or another oil which is spontaneously solubilised. Then the micelles transform into microemulsion droplets which are thermodynamically stable and their typical size lies in the range of 5-50 nm. Furthermore bicontinuous microemulsions are also known and, sometimes, blue-white emulsions with an intermediate drop size are named miniemulsions. In certain cases they can have a quite uniform drop size distribution and only a small content of surfactant. An interesting application of this emulsion type is the encapsulation of active substances after a polymerisation step [25, 26]. [Pg.70]

Gases and liquids are partly transparent to thermal radiation. Therefore emission and absorption of radiation takes place inside the gas or liquid space. In gases and liquids emission and absorption are volumetric effects. In contrast, on the surface of a solid object, radiation is completely absorbed within a very thin layer (a few micrometres). Radiation from the interior of a solid body does not penetrate the surface, emission is limited to a thin surface layer. It can therefore be said that emission and absorption of radiation by a solid body are surface effects. This means that it is allowed to speak of radiating and absorbing surfaces rather than correctly of radiating solid bodies. [Pg.25]

If you need to use a complex visual aid, build from a simpler one. The first page of a flip chart could include a simple chart, the second page could include a more detailed version of the same chart, and so on. Some speakers show a transparency with parts left out and then add the parts while speaking or else add additional transparencies as overlays. [Pg.433]
