Up to this point, we have used a numerical input file to stress the fact that computers work on numbers, not diagrams, MM3 and TINKER work from numerical input files that are similar but not identical. The various parts of a computer have different functions to deal with peripherals (the viewing screen, the mouse, the keyboard, and inputs and outputs for transmission of data), and all of these... 

A computer must communicate with a variety of peripheral devices (keyboard, mouse, printer, mass spectrometer). A central processing unit (CPU) controls the flow of information to each, rather like a choreographer directing complicated dance routines. 

Minimum computer requirements to run THERdbASE are a 486 CPU, IBM or clone, at leasi 8 MB of RAM, at least 40 MB of disk space, color VGA monitor, a mouse, Microsoft Windows. v I To install THERdbASE, execute the File/Run option from within Windows and specify SETUP.F.XE found in the THERDCD directory. The only difficulty in this method (in addition to the calculations, which are easily carried out using computers) is the fact that it is impossible to analyse tables with values that are missing, so there is a need to choose substances for which there are a whole range of LC and LD values. Since this is impossible, three tables were used, which all have in common the L050 variables for rat and mouse, orally and by intraperitoneal means of penetration, so that the coherence of the three tables and a strong enough relationship between them could be ablished. The purpose was to determine, if, in the absence of one of the classification criteria set by regulation, it was possible to choose another available criterion to determine the risk level of toxicity. 

Chiron provides a microwell plate heater, a luminometer, and data management software. The plate heater is specially designed to provide precise control of the hybridization temperature (0 0.5°C) and to distribute heat evenly throughout the microwell plate. The luminometer maintains a temperature of 37°C and accommodates the 96-well plates. The data management software runs on an IBM PC or compatible computer with a minimum of 80386,16-Mhz microprocessor, 2 Mb of RAM, monitor, mouse, compatible printer, MS DOS (version 5.0 or greater), and Windows (version 3.1 or greater). 

When in actual use, a software program is run on the computer that establishes the sampling time interval and other parameters at the discretion of the operator and begins the data acquisition at the touch of a key on the computer keyboard or at the click of the mouse. 

Creation of the retron or substructure. The user "draws" the retron on the computer screen with the mouse. Different menus allow the introduction of the necessary heteroatoms and atomic groups. 

This manual assumes that the user is familiar with a Macintosh or Windows-type graphic operating system, with a mouse, windows, pop-up menus, etc. If this is not so, the user should first familiarise him/herself with the graphic system installed in his/her computer. 

The CONSULTATION function is run by using the mouse to select the text "CONSULTATION" from the computer screen. The first question of the dialogue, "Please enter the class of your sample of interest", appears on the screen. The pop-up menu lists the sample types to chose from. The investigator then uses the mouse to select the appropriate response from the pop-up menu. This question and answer procedure continues until SpinPro has enough information, typically 10 to 15 questions, from which to infer all of the relevant parameters. The dialogue is directed by SpinPro in response to answers to previous questions. Thus, if the sample is a protein, SpinPro requests the sedimentation coefficient if the sample is a nucleic acid, SpinPro requests the type of nucleic acid. At the conclusion of the dialogue, the reports are written to the disk. Using the pop-up menu, the reports can be read or saved. 

The TRAACS 800+ is controlled by a personal computer and the features provided include complete interactive control via keyboard or mouse calculation of results as necessary taking into account baseline or sensitivity drift, graphical output of calibration curves for all calibration types—either Hnear or non-hnear, input facility for sample identification data allowing storage on disc and real-time results together with chart traces on a computer printer. The programs allow easy access to input or data files and connection to other computers, and gives system performance verification to CLP standards and built-in QC charts. 

All functions are menu-driven. Parameters used for the running cycle (for example rinse times) may be changed by using a mouse or a keyboard changed parameters can be stored permanently. There is no need for the user to have any knowledge of computer programming.
