Optical Properties. Owing to the high crystallinity of HDPE, most thick-waHed articles made from HDPE resins are opaque. Significant surface roughness can also add to the opacity. Thin HDPE film, in contrast, is translucent, but its transparency is significantly lower than that of LDPE or LLDPE film. The ultraviolet transmission limit of HDPE is around 230 nm. [Pg.381]

Optical Properties. The optical transmission of vitreous siUca is influenced by impurities and the forming process. Ultrapure vitreous siUca has the abihty to transmit from the deep ultraviolet, through the visible, and into the near-infrared spectral range. [Pg.507]

Optical Properties. The high refractive index (2.42 at 589.3 nm) and dispersion (0.044) are the basis for the brilliance and fire of a properly cut gemstone. The optical transmission out to 10.6 p.m for Type Ila diamonds makes possible windows for CO2 lasers and for devices such as were in the... [Pg.559]

O. S. Heavens. Optical Properties of Thin Solid Films. Buttcrworths, 1955. Chapter 4 presents a detailed mathematical description of the Fresnel fringing phenomenon for the transmission of light through thin films. [Pg.427]

As shown in Fig. 7, a large increase in optical absorption occurs at higher photon energies above the HOMO-LUMO gap where electric dipole transitions become allowed. Transmission spectra taken in this range (see Fig. 7) confirm the similarity of the optical spectra for solid Ceo and Ceo in solution (decalin) [78], as well as a similarity to electron energy loss spectra shown as the inset to this figure. The optical properties of solid Ceo and C70 have been studied over a wide frequency range [78, 79, 80] and yield the complex refractive index n(cj) = n(cj) + and the optical dielectric function... [Pg.51]

Optoelectronics is a discipline which combines optics and electronics. It deals with optical wavelengths from 0.20 im (ultraviolet) to 3 im (near infrared) as shown in Fig. 15.1. The properties of optoelectronic materials are a useful combination of electrical and semiconductor properties (electron action), with optical properties such as transmission, reflection, and absorption (phonon action). [Pg.384]

The light incident on a mineral surface divides itself in a number of ways. It is partly reflected, partly transmitted, and partly absorbed. Minerals exhibiting metallic bonding have a high reflectivity. Those characterized by ionic or covalent bonding have a high transmissivity. The optical properties are anisotropic they are different in different directions and depend on the arrangement of atoms in the crystals. [Pg.56]

Optical detection offers the most conventional technique to time-resolve the coherent phonons. It includes four-wave mixing [8], transient reflectivity [9,10] and transmission [7] measurements, as well as second harmonic generation (SHG) [15,32]. Coherent nuclear displacement Q induces a change in the optical properties (e.g., reflectivity R) of the crystal through the refractive index n and the susceptibility y,... [Pg.29]

SnC>2 nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method using ethanol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran (THF) and ether as solvents. X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) have been used to study the crystallographic and morphological properties of synthesized SnC>2 nanoparticles, while their optical properties have been studied by UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy. UV-Vis absorption spectra shows a weak quantum confinement in all the synthesized SnCL samples. The photo-catalytic activity of as-synthesized SnC>2 nanoparticles under UV irradiation has been evaluated using Methylene Blue (MB) dye as a test contaminant in water. The results showed that solvents played a key role to control the morphology and photo-catalytic activity of SnCE nanoparticles. [Pg.88]

The dependence of the optical properties of silicon on its microstructure is shown by the color figure in the lower left corner of this books cover. Despite the fact that the thickness of all PS samples shown has been chosen to correspond to a 20 pm thick film of bulk silicon, the difference in light transmission is dramatic [Le27]. [Pg.133]
