This appendix includes a sample procedure performance evaluation document which can be used by an evaluator to evaluate a trainee s performance of a procedure. This document, when used in conjunction with an approved, up to date procedure, becomes a performance evaluation tool. The training program requirements are contained in 49 CFR Part 380, Special Training Requirements. Training consists of classroom training and behind-the-wheel practice. All LCV trainers must be qualified according to 380.301.

Training in compliance procedures. The employer shall incorporate all written procedures and schedules required under this paragraph (f) in the information and training program required under paragraph (k) of this section and, where appropriate, post in the regulated area. 

Ultimately, the individual laboratory worker must recognize the risks of the work and the hazards inherent in the use of chemicals, biological materials, and equipment in the laboratory in order to approach the use of these items with the proper degree of care. He or she will develop this awareness of potential hazards through the training program required by OSHA for each employer under the hazard communication portion of the code (see Section 18.2). A typical research laboratory has too many potential hazards to train every worker in identification of every possible risk the task would be infeasible if not virtually impossible. Therefore, it must be the responsibility of the research worker to become informed in these areas by a process of self-education and the appUcation of common sense in dealing with the risks associated with both routine and new procedures.
