Tracer studies, feasibility

The use of various statistical techniques has been discussed (46) for two situations. For standard air quality networks with an extensive period of record, analysis of residuals, visual inspection of scatter diagrams, and comparison of cumulative frequency distributions are quite useful techniques for assessing model performance. For tracer studies the spatial coverage is better, so that identification of meiximum measured concentrations during each test is more feasible. However, temporal coverage is more limited with a specific number of tests not continuous in time. [Pg.334]

Finally, there has been speculation and recent experimental support for the involvement of a Nazarov-type cyclization in the biosynthesis of c/ s-jasmonic acid ° and marine-derived prostanoids. Radiolabel tracer studies have demonstrated Ae intermediacy of 8-HPETE (104) in the biosynthesis of prostanoid intermediate preclavulone A (lO ). This remarkable conversion was proposed to proceed by formation of allene oxide (105) followed by isomerization to (107) via the 2-oxidocyclopentadienyl cation (106 Scheme 41). To demonstrate the chemical feasibility of this proposal, Corey reported the transformation of epoxysilane (108) to, inter alia, the cyclopentenone (111 Scheme 42). The reaction is presumed to involve formation of the allene oxide (109) followed by isomerization to the 2-oxi-dopentadienylic cation (110). Conrotatory closure of (110) is expected to produce the cis isomer of (111) as observed. [Pg.780]

Blaedel and Haupert (28) demonstrated the feasibility of using this phenomenon as a preconcentration technique using isotope tracer studies on the ions Na4", Cs4", Zn24", and later Blaedel and Christensen (29) extended the work to include the anions 1 and HP01 . They found anion transport to be much slower than the previously reported cation transport. Coion transport in the anion exchange membranes was much higher and apparently dependent on the anionic charge of the bulk electrolyte. Further studies with more recently available membranes (1) seem to be needed. [Pg.473]

With the closing of the low-energy accelerator at Michigan State University and the subsequent construction of a new heavy-ion facility there, it was desirable to investigate the feasibility of producing with the less optimal heavy-ion beams. Although it was anticipated that the heavy-ion reactions would produce substantial quantities of and F, we hoped that simple chemical techniques, which we had already developed, would be adequate to purify the sources. Thus, if sujBBcient quantities of were produced by heavy-ion reactions, it would be possible to continue our tracer studies with these beams. [Pg.252]

The great structural complexity encountered among sesquiterpenes implies that multiple cyclizations, shifts, and rearrangements of the parent cyclic intermediates may occur before stabilization to the final product, and in many instances several routes to the same sesquiterpene are feasible. Whether such reactions are concerted, take place sequentially on the enzyme surface, or involve discrete free intermediates is not yet generally known, and all three mechanistic alternatives, as well as multiple pathways, have been invoked to rationalize the same sesquiterpene structures. Because very few cell-free systems are available to examine these questions directly, and because of the difficulties associated with obtaining direct evidence of biosynthetic routes via in vivo tracer studies, hypothetic il pathways based mainly on chemical reasoning have been the rule (Roberts, 1972 Rucker, 1973 Anderson ef al., 1978). [Pg.389]

The striking advantages of STM are atomic resolution, its conceptional transparency and versatility, and the appeal of direct visualisation. STM can be applied to study anisotropic surface mobility, diffusion on inhomogeneous surfaces, or adsorbate interactions and collective transport effects on a local scale. It also a technique where a simultaneous characterization of tracer and chemical diffusion on single crystals is feasible [54]. Surface mobility studies using STM are currently progressing rapidly. [Pg.277]

Administration of about 1 mg of Zn would appear to be acceptable compromise in studies with adult subjects consuming about 15 mg/day of natural zinc. However, it might be necessary, or desirable, to enrich the diet or a test meal with a second isotope (, J). Since Zn cannot be measured by neutron activation, Zn is a potential candidate for this second tracer. However, the natural abundance of this isotope is high (18.6 atomic %) so that the feasibility of its application at physiological intake levels must first be established. In situations where Zn is used as a label, Zn serves as the reference isotope because the precision of measurement of Zn is better than for Zn. [Pg.49]

The analytical procedures presented in this study are relatively simple and sample through-put through the mass spectrometer is reasonable (15 min per replicate). The results indicate that the method has promise as an alternative to radioisotope tracer methods. Long-term studies and studies with infants, children, and women are feasible without hazards to the subjects. [Pg.124]

The flow distribution in a model soil column (length 1 m, diameter 10 cm) with defined disturbing inserts (Fig. 2.1) was studied to demonstrate the feasibility of PET-studies. The measurements were carried out with a commercial PET-camera (Siemens ECAT EXACT HR (3D)). Kaliumfluoride, marked with the positron emitting isotope F-18 (half life time 110 min), was applied as hydrodynamic tracer. Fluorides of two-valent cations are only slightly soluble. The radio tracer would be absorbed in the col-... [Pg.24]

In the absence of extraneous spin relaxation effects, the decay of a radical signal is attributed to chemical reaction. Since the muon in a radical is usually at a site remote from the reaction center, it functions merely as a tracer. This is potentially a very valuable application of ftSR to the field of chemical kinetics, since it is very difficult to accurately determine radical rate constants by other means. A pilot study has demonstrated the feasibility of such a determination, using radical line widths from Fourier transform spectra to measure decay rates as functions of the concentration of an added substrate.26... [Pg.374]

Until the mid-1940 s the metabolic fate of a compound could be followed only with great difficulty. Biosynthetic studies often were limited to model experiments in unbiological systems, which served to demonstrate the chemical feasibility of certain reactions under physiological conditions . This situation changed drastically in the 1950 s when radioactive isotopes became readily available. The use of the so-caUed tracer technique, i.e.,... [Pg.70]

A wide variety of materials and many potentially hazardons components can be tested with the diffusion tube procedure. An advantage of this procedure is that processes are studied under conditions that closely resemble the actual situation in the field in terms of porewater composition, realistic concentrations of target components, interaction of components of interest, liquid/solid ratio. In addition, the chemical form of the tracer can be changed and alterations in the chemical enviromnent (e.g. redox status, pH, capacity of complex formation) can be stndied. The waste/soil interface can be studied by combining waste and soil in one dilfusion tube and measuring the transport of tracer from the waste into the soil. The same approach has been proven feasible with convective flow across the interface. [Pg.158]
