Toxic chemicals, problems with

Calabash curare originates in the more northern parts of the subcontinent, particularly in the Amazon and Orinoco basins and surrounding regions. It is considerably more toxic than tube-curare and has presented much more formidable chemical problems with regard to both isolation and structural elucidation. [Pg.516]

An elementary introduction to chemistry is given in Chapter 3 this serves only to provide background and for more advanced consideration reference will be necessary to specific text books, e.g. as listed in the Bibliography. A brief discussion of the relevance of physicochemical principles to hazard identification is given in Chapter 4. Relevant toxic and flammable properties, and summaries of appropriate precautions to cater for them during handling, use and disposal, are provided in Chapters 5 and 6, respectively. Reactive hazards are discussed in Chapter 7. The special problems with cryogenic materials and chemicals under pressure, typified by compressed... [Pg.3]

The latter problems are of particular interest to chemists, who should devise appropriate methods for resolving the complexity of chemicals, properly identifying them and finally determining their exact composition and makeup. The participation of chemists is needed to verify the concept of allelopathy as a concentration-dependent phenomenon. They should help to reconstitute the chemical composition as it was found in the original and isolated plant samples. This systematic approach leads to verification of the concept as well as to proper assessment of the initial observation with crude extracts, and to final application to the field situation. Once the concept is proven, same simulation experiments need to be performed to maximize the allelopathic effect (toxin action). The concentration of the toxic chemicals is varied to where the threshold levels of chemicals prove to be involved in the exhibition of allelopathy under field conditions. [Pg.50]

The main problem connected with chemical terrorism is that beside chemical weapons, terrorists can use different toxic chemicals from the chemical industry, the agriculture or products released from industrial facilities following a terrorist act. An attack on a chemical plant can immediately release a number of different kinds of chemicals [6], Some differences exist between chemical weapons (CW) and the chemicals released after destruction of a chemical plant following a terrorist act [4] ... [Pg.6]

Currently, scientists and experts from many countries are working on development and implementation of a readiness for anti terrorist actions. In addition to chemical weapons, terrorists can use various toxic chemicals from chemical industry, agriculture or products released from terrorist acts on industrial facilities. The arsenal of chemical agents that can be used as terrorist agents is practically unlimited. The focus of this workshop was assessment of scientific concepts and practical means for management of chemical agent casualties in the area of terrorist attack with emphasis on improving the medical treatment and decontamination. These problems were analyzed from an interdisciplinary perspective. [Pg.243]
