Toughness, unit

Thus, the critical stress intensity factor K- is a sufficient measure of the toughness and, hence, is also called the fracture toughness. Units of fracture toughness are MPa m. ... [Pg.359]

The elasticity of a fiber describes its abiUty to return to original dimensions upon release of a deforming stress, and is quantitatively described by the stress or tenacity at the yield point. The final fiber quaUty factor is its toughness, which describes its abiUty to absorb work. Toughness may be quantitatively designated by the work required to mpture the fiber, which may be evaluated from the area under the total stress-strain curve. The usual textile unit for this property is mass pet unit linear density. The toughness index, defined as one-half the product of the stress and strain at break also in units of mass pet unit linear density, is frequentiy used as an approximation of the work required to mpture a fiber. The stress-strain curves of some typical textile fibers ate shown in Figure 5. [Pg.270]

Film. By far the largest appHcation for LLDPE resins (over 60% in the United States) is film. Because LLDPE film has high tensile strength and puncture resistance, it is able to compete with HDPE film for many uses. The toughness and low temperature properties of LLDPE film also exceed those of conventional LDPE. Furthermore, because LLDPE resins exhibit relatively low strain hardening in the molten state and lower extensional viscosity, it can be produced at high rates with Httle risk of bubble breaks. [Pg.404]

Gf = toughness (sometimes, critical strain energy release rate). Usual units kj m 2 ... [Pg.135]

K,- = lG,. = fracture toughness (sometimes critical stress intensity factor). Usual units MN m ... [Pg.136]

Poly(vinyl alcohol) is employed for a variety of purposes. Film cast from aqueous alcohol solution is an important release agent in the manufacture of reinforced plastics. Incompletely hydrolysed grades have been developed for water-soluble packages for bath salts, bleaches, insecticides and disinfectants. Techniques for making tubular blown film, similar to that used with polyethylene, have been developed for this purpose. Moulded and extruded products which combine oil resistance with toughness and flexibility are produced in the United States but have never become popular in Europe. [Pg.391]

The toughness is the energy per unit area to grow the craze to its maximum width so assuming that the stress along the craze is constant... [Pg.229]

Gc is a material property which is referred to as the toughness, critical strain energy release rate or crack extension force. It is effectively the energy required to increase the crack length by unit length in a piece of material of unit width. It has units of J/m. ... [Pg.122]

Zahigkeits-einheit, /, unit of viscosity (or tenacity or ductility), -grad, m. (degree of) viscosity or ductility or tenacity, -mass, n. measure of ductihty (or tenacity or viscosity), -messer, m. viscosimeter, -probe, /. tough ness (or ductihty or viscosity) test or sample,... [Pg.522]

Nylon 10,10 is an extremely tough, strong polymer used to make reinforcing rods for concrete. Draw a segment of nylon 10,10, and show its monomer units. [Pg.1222]

For steel, passivation is achieved by the surface formation of a tough, adherent mixture of oxides. The passive film is primarily gamma-magnetite (y-Fe203) but also contains gamma-hydrated ferric oxide (y-FeOOH). The film thickness is perhaps 15 A to 30 A (angstrom units). [Pg.648]

High-density polyethylene has aligned chains of CH2 units, giving a tough, rigid polymer with a high... [Pg.913]

Poly(2,6-dimethyl-l,4-oxyphenylene) (poly(phenylene oxide), PPG) is a material widely used as high-performance engineering plastics, thanks to its excellent chemical and physical properties, e.g., a high 7 (ca. 210°C) and mechanically tough property. PPO was first prepared from 2,6-dimethylphenol monomer using a copper/amine catalyst system. 2,6-Dimethylphenol was also polymerized via HRP catalysis to give a polymer exclusively consisting of 1,4-oxyphenylene unit, while small amounts of Mannich-base and 3,5,3, 5 -tetramethyl-4,4 -diphenoquinone units are always contained in the chemically prepared PPO. [Pg.233]
