The next series of reports based on use of bark for wet process hardboard were published over a 7-year span from 1950-1956 by Anderson and Runckel. In the first report (22), the results included laboratory boards made from Douglas-fir slabwood containing bark, which varied between 15 and 45% of the total furnish. Bending tests indicated adequate strengths were obtained, and addition of bark enhanced moisture resistance of the boards. Acceptable boards also were made when white fir and western hemlock barks made up a portion of the furnish. No binder was added to the Asplund-type fiber. [Pg.255]

Fatty Acid-Oil Process. When oil represents only a minor portion (33% or less) of the total furnish of fatty acids in an alkyd formulation, the alcoholysis step may be avoided. All of the ingredients, dibasic acid, polyol, oil, and free fatty acids may be charged together into the reactor and proceed as in the fatty acid process. Apparently, the oil is incorporated into the resin by ester interchange at the reaction... [Pg.3315]

Monoammonium Phosphate. Monoammonium phosphate [7722-76-1] (MAP), NH4H2PO4, has become second only to diammonium phosphate as a phosphate fertilizer material of trade. During the year ended June 30, 1990, monoammonium phosphate used ia the United States furnished 985 thousand t of P2O5 as compared to 1.5 million t furnished by diammonium phosphate and 240 thousand t by triple superphosphate (Fig. 7). Monoammonium phosphate furnished 25% of total P2O5 consumption. [Pg.230]

MgO. Only about 5% of total fertilizer potash is furnished as potassium sulfate and other nonchlotide forms including potassium nitrate. [Pg.232]

Special purpose and blended Portland cements are manufactured essentially by the same processes as ordinary Portland cements but have specific compositional and process differences. White cements are made from raw materials of very low iron content. This type is often difficult to bum because almost the entire Hquid phase must be furnished by calcium aluminates. As a consequence of the generally lower total Hquid-phase content, high burning-zone temperatures may be necessary. Past cooling and occasionally oil sprays are needed to maintain both quaHty and color. [Pg.293]

The area. A, is the product of actual lift and the valve opening periphery and is the total for all inlet or discharge valves in a cylinder. The lift is a compressor vendor-furnished number. [Pg.63]

When solution must be pumped, consideration should be given to use of holding tanks between the dry feed system and feed pumps, and the solution water supply should be controlled to prevent excessive dilution. The dry feeders may be started and stopped by tank level probes. Variable-control metering pumps can then transfer the alum stock solution to the point of application without further dilution. Means should be provided for calibration of the chemical feeders. Volumetric feeders may be mounted on platform scales. Belt feeders should include a sample chute and box to catch samples for checking actual delivery with set delivery. Gravimetric feeders are usually furnished with totalizers only. Remote instrumentation is frequently used with gravimetric equipment, but seldom used with volumetric equipment. [Pg.95]

Many 3-substituted indoles have also been prepared with the use of a-alkyl or a-aryl-p-keto sulfides. Thus indolization of aniline 5 with 3-methylthio-2-butanone 27 furnished indolenine 28, presumably via the same mechanism discussed earlier. The indolenine 28 was relatively unstable and reduced to the indole 29 without purification. Tetrahydrocarbazole 32 was prepared in 58% overall yield. Smith et al. made excellent use of the Gassman process in the total synthesis of (-i-)-paspalicine and (+)-paspalinine. ... [Pg.130]

The Stille coupling of an aryl triflate normally calls for the addition of at least one equivalent of LiCl. Presumably, the transmetallation is facilitated by replacing triflate with CP at the palladium intermediate generated from oxidative addition. As Stille demonstrated in 1988, 4-quinolinyl triflate 100 was coupled with phenylstannane 101 in the presence of Pd(Ph3P)4 and LiCl in refluxing 1,4-dioxane to furnish biaryl 102, which was used as an intermediate for the first total synthesis of antibiotic amphimedine (88JA4051). [Pg.17]

Preparation of 1 -(/3-D-arabinofuranosyl)-2-thiocytosine A solution of 2.0 g of 1 -(2, 3, 5 -0-triacetyl-/3-D-arabinofuranosyl)-2,4-dithiouracil in 100 ml of methanol is saturated with anhydrous ammonia at 0°C. The mixture, in a glass liner, is heated in a pressure bomb at 100°C for three hours. The reaction mixture is concentrated to a gum in vacuo, and most of the byproduct acetamide is removed by sublimation at 60°C/0.1 mm. The residue is chromatographed on 100 g of silica gel. Elution of the column with methylene chloride-methanol mixtures with methanol concentrationsof 2-25% gives fractions containing acetamide and a series of brown gums. The desired product is eluted with 30% methanol-methylene chloride to give a total yield of 0.386 g (30%), MP 175°-180°C (dec.). Recrystallization from methanol-iso-propanol furnishes an analytical sample, MP 180°-182°C (dec.). [Pg.92]

The total pressure can be regarded as a sum of the parts furnished by the individual pressures exerted by each of the components of the gas mixtures. The pressure exerted by each of the gases in a gas mixture is called the partial pressure of that gas. The partial pressure is the pressure that the gas would exert if it were alone in the container. In the example of Figure 4-3, the total pressure in the third bulb is 113 mm. The partial pressure of water vapor in this bulb is 20 mm and the partial pressure of air is 93 mm. [Pg.55]
