The growth and decay of all other species (including O3) were monitored by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy at a total pathlength of 460 meters and a spectral resolution of 1 cm". At this pathlength, the intense absorptions of H2O and CO limit the usable IR spectral windows to the approximate regions 750-1300, 2000-2300, and 2400-3000 cm". Each spectrum (700-3000 cm" ) was adequately covered by the response of the Cu Ge detector. Fixed pathlength transmission flow-cells for aqueous solution analysis are easily clogged. Attenuated total reflectance (ATR) provides an alternative method for aqueous solution analysis that avoids this problem. Sabo et al. Attenuated total internal reflection (ATR) probes offer several advantages over other probe types. ATR is a phenomenon that relies on a difference in the index of refraction of a crystal and that of the solution with which it is in contact to prevent light from escaping the crystal. Only the evanescent wave of the light interacts with the solution layer at the crystal face. The result is an optical pathlength of only a few microns. Typical designs make use of faceted crystals or hemispheres (see Figure 6.1). The most common ATR material in the UV-vis is sapphire. In rare cases, fused silica may be used. ATR allows spectra to be taken of neat samples with optical density (OD) of 500-1000... [Pg.176]

FTIR reflectance and transmission spectroscopy is used for analysis of thin films. Nevertheless, due to the high absorptivities of mid-IR bands, the film thickness must be limited (up to 100 pm, depending on the specific bands chosen) in order to perform an accurate qualitative analysis. Other IR methods, such as attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and photoacoustic methods provide IR spectra of thick material, because they penetrate a very thin layer at the surface of a sample. However, is important to point out that the effective pathlength for the ATR and the photo-acoustic methods depends on the refractive index and thermal diffusivity, respectively. Therefore, the use of these techniques for the quantitative analysis of non-homo-geneous materials can be difficult. [Pg.217]

Transflection is essentially a cross between transmission and reflection. When light is shined onto a reflective surface covered by an optically clear sample, two processes occur - reflection off the top surface of the sample and transmission and reflection off the mirror, followed by a second transmission. As for most materials the surface reflection is low in comparison to the reflection off the mirror, the total collected radiation corresponds to a transmission measurement with double pathlength. Instead of a transparent support, transflection systems require only a spectrally neutral, or at least constant, broadband reflector under the sample. [Pg.161]
