As an illustration, this work presents an appHcation of neural networks to the optimal design of a two-dimensional reinforced concrete frame under seismic excitation. The optimization considers three performance requirements operational, life safety and collapse. Each, in turn, has an associated minimum target reliability. Three objectives are considered for the optimization 1) optimum beam and columns dimensions for minimum total structural volume 2) optimum steel reinforcement ratio for minimum total steel weight and 3) optimum beam and column dimensions, and steel reinforcement ratio, for minimum total structural construction cost. [Pg.548]

Unfortunately, exclusion chromatography has some inherent disadvantages that make its selection as the separation method of choice a little difficult. Although the separation is based on molecular size, which might be considered an ideal rationale, the total separation must be contained in the pore volume of the stationary phase. That is to say all the solutes must be eluted between the excluded volume and the dead volume, which is approximately half the column dead volume. In a 25 cm long, 4.6 mm i.d. column packed with silica gel, this means that all the solutes must be eluted in about 2 ml of mobile phase. It follows, that to achieve a reasonable separation of a multi-component mixture, the peaks must be very narrow and each occupy only a few microliters of mobile phase. Scott and Kucera (9) constructed a column 14 meters long and 1 mm i.d. packed with 5ja... [Pg.36]

The activity tests of the catalyst were carried out in a microflow reactor set-up in which all the high temperature parts are constructed of hastelloy-C and monel. The reactor effluent was analyzed by an on-line gas chromatograph with an Ultimetal Q column (75 m x 0.53 mm), a flame ionization detector, and a thermal conductivity detector. The composition of the feed to the reactor can be varied, besides the temperature, pressure, and space velocity. The influence of the recycle components CHCIF2 and methane was tested by adding these components to the feed. In total five stability experiments of over 1600 hours were performed. In each... [Pg.370]

Sampling sites are also referred to as station locations. For water column work, depth profiles are constructed from seawater samples collected at representative depths. Temperature and salinity are measured in situ with sensors. Remote-closing sampling bottles deployed from a hydrowire are used to collect water for later chemical analysis, either on the ship or in a land-based laboratory. The standard chemical measurements made on the water samples include nutrients (nitrate, phosphate, and silicate), dissolved O2, and total dissolved inorganic carbon (TDIC) concentrations. [Pg.225]

Assuming an exclusion volume of 5 ml per column allows construction of Table I from Equation 1. Table I lists the bandwidth in microliters as a function of column plate number and the number of columns in series. The data assume that the plate number may be generated at total exclusion, as well as at total permeation actual measurements made using the smaller pore size column si ibstantiate this. [Pg.191]

To properly fluidize and mix the material in the container, the correct choice of container and air distributor must be made. The container volume should be chosen such that the bowl is filled to at least 35 0% of its total volume and no more than 90% of its total volume. The correct choice of air distributor is important. These distributors are made of stainless steel and are available with a 2-30% open area. Typically, the distributor should be chosen so that the pressure drop across the product bed and air distributor is 200-300 mm of water column. A fine screen of 60-325 mesh normally covers the air distributor and retains the product in the container. This type of sandwiched construction has been used for the last 30 years in the fluid bed processors. The classic air distributor with the fine-prod-uct-retaining screen is shown in Figure 5. [Pg.179]

A process in your company generates waste gases that need to be vented to the outside at a rate of 1 m3 per hour. In particular, you must be sure that the 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane present at 100 ppmv (i.e., 100 x 10 6 m3 of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloro-ethane vapor per m3 of total gas) will be removed from the gas-stream before discharge. Someone suggests you construct an adsorbent column filled with alumina (A1203) and run the gas through that column to capture the 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroet-hane. [Pg.452]

In column 110, it is also theoretically possible that glycine com-plexed with the added humic acid and that it was sequestered in the aqueous phase of the Teflon eluate and bound to the Teflon bed. To test this explanation, a 1/10-scale parfait column was constructed and 4 liCi of 14C-glycine, 40 fig total, was applied in 800 mL of synthetic hard water (column 123). In this experiment, the alcohol and solvent 1 conditioning washes were combined with the standard eluates of each bed before counting. These solutions were not concentrated before counting. Quench correction was by the channels ratio method. [Pg.514]
