Titanium Sulfides. The titanium sulfur system has been summarized (4). Titanium subsulftde [1203-08-6] Ti2S, forms as a gray soHd of density 4600 kg/m when titanium monosulftde [12039-07-5], TiS, is heated at 1000°C with titanium ia a sealed tube. It can also be formed by heating a mixture of the two elements at 800—1000°C. The sulfide, although soluble ia concentrated hydrochloric and sulfuric acids, is iasoluble ia alkaUes. [Pg.133]

The principal use of titanium sulfides is as a cathode material ia high efficieacy batteries (11). In these appHcations, the titanium disulfide acts as a host material for various alkafl or alkaline-earth elements. [Pg.133]

The titanium sulfide is able to act as a lithium reservoir. On iatercalation with lithium, the titanium lattice expands from ca 570 to 620 pm as the iatercalation proceeds to completion on formation of TiI iS2. A variety of metal sulfides and their mixtures have been employed to improve the friction stability, wear, and noise characteristics of friction materials. Commonly used sulfides are antimony trisulfide, molybdenum disulfide, tin sulfides, zinc sulfide, copper sulfides, titanium sulfide, and bismuth trisulfide. Sulfide lubricants are usually used to complement carbonaceous lubricants. Fluoride and molybdate additives are sometimes used to enhance the action of carbonaceous and sulfide lubricants. It was quite interesting to observe the sulfidation behaviour of TiAl. Narita et al. [60] found that the sulfidation of TiAl in a gaseous mixture of H2S and H2 results in the formation of titanium sulfides. As the sulfide scale grew by the outward diffusion of Ti. Al was enriched on the substrate surface as TiAl3 with a small amount of TiAl2 as shown in Fig. 10 [60]. After removing the sulfide scale they oxidised the specimen to show a very excellent oxidation resistance. A similar idea may apply to nitridation of TiAl, if preferential nitridation of Ti takes place. [Pg.70]
