Polysulfides of several metals can be prepared by reaction of the metals with excess sulfur in liquid NH3 (group IA metals) or by heating sulfur with the molten metal sulfide. The polysulfide ion binds to metals to form coordination compounds in which it is attached to the metal by both sulfur atoms (as a so-called bidentate ligand). One example is an unusual titanium complex containing the S52-ion that is produced by the following reaction (the use of h to denote the bonding mode of the cyclo-pentadienyl ion is explained in Chapter 16) ... [Pg.528]

The present preparation Illustrates a general and convenient method for a two-step deoxygenation of carbonyl compounds to olefins. Related procedures comprise the basic decomposition of p-toluenesulfonylhydrazones,2 the hydride reduction of enol ethers,3 enol acetates,9 enamines,3 3 the reduction of enol phosphates (and/or enol phosphorodlamidates) by lithium metal in ethylamine (or liquid ammonia),33 the reduction of enol phosphates by titanium metal under aprotic conditions,32 the reduction of thioketals by Raney nickel,33 and the reduction of vinyl sulfides by Raney nickel in the presence of isopropylmagnesium bromide.3 ... [Pg.141]

Bearing these considerations in mind, Reddy and Verkade prepared a titanium alkoxide complex, 72, with good stability toward moisture for the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfones and sulfoxides with hydrogen peroxide in recyclable ionic liquid solvents at room temperature [56]. They optimized reaction conditions and recovering procedure for thioanisole 71, and used their obtained results for oxidation of different aliphatic, aromatic and xmsaturated sulfides. Their results proved the chemoselectivity... [Pg.257]

Metathetical reaction pathways are not as well studied as other precursor methods. This approach, though requiring the use of two precursors, can be performed in the liquid, gas or solid state. Chianelli and Dines (5) have carried out a series of investigations on the solution preparation of transition-metal dichalcogenides. Titanium tetrachloride, for example, was found to react with lithium sulfide in nonaqueous solvents to produce metal disulfide and lithium chloride (equation 1). [Pg.370]
