Finally, spintronics represents a new field of research, development, and appUca-tions that utilizes electron spins for high-control quantum electronics. Recently, the depairing of Cooper pairs in low-T superconductors such as A1 metal was observed experimentally in superconductor-ferromagnet hybrid structures (Beckmann et al, 2004). As the paired state can survive within a characteristic distance when soaked from the superconductor into normal metal wires, electrons with oppositely oriented spins can be sampled in adequately magnetized wires, provided that the wire separation is within, but close to, the coherence length of the Cooper pairs. [Pg.342]

Insurance is protec tion against risk. Commercial insurance companies minimize their own risks by covering a large number of individuals against a given risk and also by offering coverage on a wide variety of different types of risk. It is frequently quite difficult to assess the probability of success of a particular research and development project. It is much easier for an insurance company to assess its probabih-ties from its casualty tables. [Pg.831]

Catalytic Reactions This use has provided the greatest impetus for use, development, and research in the field of flmdized solids. Some of the details pertaining to this use are to be found in the preceding pages of this sec tion. Reference should also be made to... [Pg.1572]

Direct-Liquefaction Kinetics All direct-liquefac tion processes consist of three basic steps (1) coal slurrying in a vehicle solvent, (2) coal dissolution under high pressure and temperature, and (3) transfer of hydrogen to the dissolved coal. However, the specific reac tion pathways and associated kinetics are not known in detail. Overall reaction schemes and semiempirical relationships have been generated by the individual process developers, but apphcations are process specific and limited to the range of the specific data bases. More extensive research into liquefaction kinetics has been conducted on the laboratory scale, and these results are discussed below. [Pg.2372]

Considerable progress has been made on C02 fixation in photochemical reduction. The use of Re complexes as photosensitizers gave the best results the reduction product was CO or HCOOH. The catalysts developed in this field are applicable to both the electrochemical and photoelectrochemical reduction of C02. Basic concepts developed in the gas phase reduction of C02 with H2 can also be used. Furthermore, electrochemical carboxyla-tion of organic molecules such as olefins, aromatic hydrocarbons, and alkyl halides in the presence of C02 is also an attractive research subject. Photoinduced and thermal insertion of C02 using organometallic complexes has also been extensively examined in recent years. [Pg.392]

There is a large variety of polar and radical reactions, transition metal-catalyzed and pericyclic conversions, that have been carefully developed with regard to scope, selectivity, and yield. They are compiled in large compendia, for example, in [16-19], and in series, for example [20, 21], and are continuously improved and extended in timely research papers. This literature should be consulted in parallel with suggestions taken from electrosynthesis. Electrosynthesis is a clear alternative to chemical synthesis, when reactive intermediates (see Sect. 3.3) such as radical ions, radicals, carbanions, or carboca-tions are involved. The more advantageous are summarized in the following sections. [Pg.79]
