Tinting paints

Clear-liquid separation is the appearance of a clear supernatant layer above the bulk of opaque paint after shelf-aging. This separation can occur within 1 day and be several inches thick in a 1-gal can. In tinted paints, colorant may float up into this layer and produce a very displeasing in-can appearance. Reincorporation of the supernatant layer by hand stirring or mechanical agitation usually solves the problem only temporarily because the clear-liquid layer returns after several days. HEUR/HEC- and HEUR/hydro-phobically modified HEC-thickened paints are particularly prone to this separation. 

Tinting paints are used to tint and shade emulsion paints. They contain colored pigments and wetting agents to ensure good color development in white emulsion paints.

Oil color (1539) n. Oil paint containing a high concentration of colored pigment, commonly used for tinting paint. Syn oil paste. 

When oxygenated, the compound is called oxyhemoglobin when the iron, which is normally in the Fe(ll) state, is converted to the Fe(IIl) state, the compound loses its oxygen binding capacity and is called methemoglobin. Oxyhemoglobin is an article of commerce (where it is often called hemoglobin) it has the form of a brownish red powder or scales and is the sonrce of colour where blood (q.v.) was used to tint paint.
