In ERD A analysis, mass identification is done by means of the ToF method, i.e., the coincident measurement of energy and flight time for each recoil. Time-of-fight elastic recoil detection (ToF-ERD) is a powerful and complimentary technique to Rutherford spectrometry for elemental analysis in surface... [Pg.164]

Because of its motor, i.e., activating effect on vascular smooth muscle and its inhibitory effect on intestinal smooth muscle, the sympathetic nervous system has been cast into the role of the component of the nervous system that executes control of visceral function in times of physical emergency for the organism. The phrase fight or flight has been often used to describe the circumstances in which the adrenergic transmitters of the sympathetic system are dominant over the cholinergic parasympathetic system. This concept is perhaps oversimplified but it has the utility of a first approximation of how the two components of the ANS interact in the periphery. Sensory inputs which lead to increased blood pressure, for example, activate the sympathetic pathways. [Pg.198]

The effect of Ug on photocatalytic activity of TiC /silica gel as a bed material in the CFB photoreactor is shown in Fig. 3. As can be seen, TCE conversion over TiC /silica gel photocatalyst exhibits a maximum value at Ug = 1.5 ms-1 where UV fight transmission and mixing of TiC /silica gel and TCE gas might be at the optimum condition. Thereafter, TCE conversion decreases with a further increase in Ug due to bypassing of unreacted TCE gas and reduction of residence time of TCE gas in the photoreactor [5,7], Therefore, it can be concluded that photo degradation of TCE requires... [Pg.329]

As mentioned above, in each section of the SMBR, a specific task must be fulfilled and certain binary selectivities can be chosen as key adsorption parameters to explain the separation behavior in each section. In section I, the heavy product (water) must be desorbed by the eluent (methanol) from the ion-exchange resin, and therefore a low selectivity between water and methanol is desirable in order to reduce the methanol flow rate in this section as much as possible. In section IV, the fight component (methyl acetate) is removed from the eluent stream, and consequently a low-selectivity methanol/methyl acetate is advantageous. In sections II and III, the products water and methyl acetate are separated and a high-selectivity water/ methyl acetate is therefore beneficial. The selectivity of acetic acid to methyl acetate and the water/acetic acid selectivity should also be high in order to permit an easy separation of acetic acid from the products - which in turn allows the residence time of acetic acid to be increased and the conversion to be raised. [Pg.199]

Bob stares at his audience. Sometimes I dream of disappearing from our Universe as I fall close to the speed of fight into the tiny central singularity where all the laws and properties of our physical Universe shatter, where gravity turns time and space to subatomic putty, and God divides by zero. .. ... [Pg.166]
