It is well known that crop management systems, the quality of the soil and the weathering conditions are just some of the factors used in order to assess production of GHG. Therefore, an understanding of the future environmental impacts of crop production is essential in order to achieve greater crop yields without decreasing the quality of the environment and social welfare. Additionally, Tilman [2] reported that the recent intensification of agriculture, coupled with the prospect of even further intensification in the future, will have major detrimental impacts on the world s ecosystems.

Over the last 40 years conventional poultry (and in particular chicken) production has undergone the most extreme level of intensification of all major livestock production systems. This was driven by a more rapid increase in demand for poultry meat (which was perceived by consumers as leaner and healthier) and to a lesser extent eggs, compared to other livestock products (e.g. red meat, milk), which often saw unchanged or decreasing consumption patterns (Frazer, 1996 Tilman et al., 2002).

The costs and benefits of various agricultural practices must be based on local values and local constraints, causing sustainable practices to be region and culture specific (Tilman et al. 2002) no universal recipe exists.
