The volume of thermosetting powders sold exceeds that of thermoplastics by a wide margin. Thermoplastic resins are almost synonymous with fluidized-bed appHed thick-film functional coatings whereas thermosetting powders are used almost exclusively in electrostatic spray processes and appHed as thin-film decorative coatings. [Pg.317]

Bonded Solid-Film Lubricants. Although a thin film of soHd lubricant that is burnished onto a wearing surface often is useful for break-in operations, over 95% are resin bonded for improved life and performance (62). Use of adhesive binders permits apphcations of coatings 5—20 p.m thick by spraying, dipping, or bmshing as dispersions in a volatile solvent. The main value of salt-spray tests is in the evaluation of the effectiveness of phosphate coatings in restricting the spread of rust from scratches or other points of damage in a paint film. This feature is of particular interest to the motorcar industry, as vehicles are often exposed to marine atmospheres and to moisture and salt when the latter is used to disperse ice and frost from road surfaces. Great care is needed in the interpretation of a salt-spray test, as it has been found to favour thin iron phosphate coatings more than is justified by experience with natural weathering. In the motorcar industry the present custom is to use zinc phosphate coatings on the car bodies and all other parts exposed to the outside atmosphere. [Pg.716]

A glass substrate carrying an ITO film having a thickness of 150 nm was spin coated with 70 nm of poly(3,4)ethylenedioxythiophene/polystyrenesulfonic acid thin film and then dried at 200°C for 10 minutes. A 50-nm coating of a selected experimental agent was sprayed onto the initial film and dried. For zinc deposits, various chromates can produce very thin, blue-bright coatings to get up to about 24 hours salt spray protection before the zinc corrodes (white corrosion salts), thicker yellow iridescent films for up to about 100 hours, and thickest, olive-drab coatings that may give upward of 300 hours (160). A modification of the olive-drab chromate solution with a silver salt produces a black finish, but salt spray resistance drops back to 48—72 hours. Topcoats of waxes are often used on such blacks. Ceramic and semiconductor thin films have been prepared by a number of methods including chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spray-coating, and sol-gel techniques. In the present work, the sol-gel method was chosen to prepare uniform, thin films of titanium oxides on palladium Titanium oxide was chosen because of its versatility as a support material and also because the sol-gel synthesis of titania films has been clearly described by Takahashi and co-workers (22). The procedure utilized herein follows the work of Takahashi, but is modified to take advantage of the hydrogen permeability of the palladium substrate. Our objective was to develop a reliable procedure for the fabrication of thin titania films on palladium, and then to evaluate the performance of the resulting metalloceramic membranes for hydrogen transport and ethylene hydrogenation for comparison to the pure palladium membrane results. [Pg.174]
