Thermoplastic styrenics

Polystyrene (PS) is the fourth big-volume thermoplastic. Styrene can be polymerized alone or copolymerized with other monomers. It can be polymerized by free radical initiators or using coordination catalysts. Recent work using group 4 metallocene combined with methylalumi-noxane produce stereoregular polymer. When homogeneous titanium catalyst is used, the polymer was predominantly syndiotactic. The heterogeneous titanium catalyst gave predominantly the isotactic. Copolymers with butadiene in a ratio of approximately 1 3 produces SBR, the most important synthetic rubber. [Pg.334]

The properties of block copolymers differ from those of a blend of the correponding homopolymers or a random copolymer (Chapter 7) with the same overall composition. An important practical example is the ABA-type styrene/butadiene/styrene triblock copolymer. These behave as thermoplastic elastomers. Ordinary elastomers are cross-linked by covalent bonds, e.g., vulcanization (see Chapter 2) to impart elastic recovery property, as without this there will be permanent deformation. The styrene-diene triblock copolymer consists of individual chains of three blocks, an elastomeric diene block in the center and a thermoplastic styrene block on each end. This polymer is called a thermoplastic elastomer. It exhibits some of the physical properties of elastomers at use temperature and is as pro-cessable as conventional plastics (5). The styrene/diene triblock copolymer has the unique morphology of glassy polystyrene domains in the rubbery diene matrix.
