Thermodynamics and Mechanistics

To provide a rational framework in terms of which the student can become familiar with these concepts, we shall organize our discussion of the crystal-liquid transition in terms of thermodynamic, kinetic, and structural perspectives. Likewise, we shall discuss the glass-liquid transition in terms of thermodynamic and mechanistic principles. Every now and then, however, to impart a little flavor of the real world, we shall make reference to such complications as the prior history of the sample, which can also play a role in the solid behavior of a polymer. 

Detaded thermodynamic and mechanistic analyses of solubilization and related mechanisms are given in References 17 and 82—84. These works show that under proper circumstances, solubilization can make a significant contribution to ody-sod removal. 

The ability of N to exist in its compounds in at least 10 different oxidation states from —3 to +5 poses certain thermodynamic and mechanistic problems that invite systematic treatment. The reactions of the several manganese gluconate complexes with molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide have been studied in terms of stoichiometry and reaction kinetics. To summarize, it may be said that the addition of hydrogen to 1,3-butadiene in gas phase reactions occurs partly by a 1-2-inechanism over all metal catalysts giving 1-butene in the gas phase. 2-Butene is either produced directly by a simultaneous 1-4-addition process as in the cobalt- and palladium-catalyzed reactions, or it is produced indirectly by the isomerization of 1-butene after its initial formation on the surface as is the case with the remaining metals of Group VIII and copper. Polymers may be produced from monomers by polymerization or from other polymers by the requisite chemical conversions. All syntheses that lead from low-molar-mass molecules (monomers) to high-molar-mass compounds (polymers) are called polymerizations.
