Thermoanalytical testing results

Thermoanalytical methods, such as TG, where degradation of a material can be measured under conditions that accelerate its rate and the resulting parameters extrapolate to predict a service lifetime could have great commercial importancel" in the construction industry. They could be used not only for planning economic replacement before catastrophic failure occurs or avoiding premature replacement, but also for developing specifications for quality assurance and control tests and formulations. 

The applicability of thermoanalytical techniques for characterizing roof membrane materials was supported by studies carried out in the early 90s.[ l"t46] jjj 1993 Paroli, et al.,l l also published the results of a study on the effects of accelerated heat aging on three poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) roofing membranes using TG, DMA, and tensile testing. The results ofthe inter-laboratory study showed that the exposures produced only minor ehanges in the measured thermoanalytical properties. The materials tested were generally stable under the outdoor and laboratory exposure conditions. In the ease of TG analysis of the pyrolyzable organic constituents, it was found that the method showed rather good within- and between-laboratory variability.
