Thermal stress removal

I. Spectroscopic Determinations. Gas-phase infrared spectra provide a useful adjunct to vapor pressure measurements in the identification of volatile materials. The cell illustrated in Fig. 9.15 allows the sample to be quantitatively returned to the vacuum line after the spectrum has been obtained, so the process is completely nondestructive. The primary problem with a gas cell is to obtain a vacuum-tight seal between the window material and the cell body this may be accomplished with Glyptal paint or with wax- If the latter is used, it is necessary to warm and cool the alkali halide windows slowly to avoid cracking them due to thermal stress. For this purpose an infrared lamp is handy. The most satisfactory method of attaching windows is O-rings because this allows the easy removal of the windows for cleaning and polishing. [Pg.98]

Under thermal stress the terpenoid sulfides tend to undergo side chain loss and consequently thermally more mature oils are leaner in the longer chain members of each series than are thermally less mature oils, Figure 14. Biodegradation does not appear to affect the terpenoid sulfides but has been shown to remove n-alkyl-substituted thiolanes and thianes (241. and thus the terpenoid fraction of the sulfides becomes relatively enhanced on biodegradation. [Pg.385]

The plant control system was designed with several objectives in mind. First, reactor outlet temperature was to be maintained at 885°C using the reactor outlet temperature controller described above. Second, to minimise thermal stresses in the IHX, the flows on the hot and cold side of the IHX are maintained near equal over the course of the transient. To accomplish this primary system inventory is adjusted by a PI controller to force the differential between primary and PCU flow rate to track a set point of near 0 kg/s. Third, to maintain high PCU efficiency in the presence of a changing electric generator load (forcing function) inventory control is used. Inventory is adjusted by a PI controller to force shaft speed to track a constant set point of 60 Hz. Fourth, cooler powers are adjusted (via cold side flow rates) for heat removal consistent with PCU operation under inventory control. Shelf-life estimation involves developing a thermodynamic model of the dry reagent chemistry. This model is used to make projections of the shelf-life and the estimates are continuously compared with real time data to substantiate the validity of the model or to revise it. A typical study to create a database for shelf-life estimation may consist of subjecting a dry reagent chemistry, in its final packaging format, to continuous thermal stress for 2-3 years in the temperature range of 0-70 °C. An example of a schedule for such a study is shown in Fig. la. The third main step of combustion synthesis technologies is postsynthesis treatment. This step is optional, since not all products require additional processing after synthesis. Powder milling and sieving are used to yield powders with a desired particle size distribution. Annealing at elevated temperatures (800-1200°C) removes residual thermal stress in brittle products. Pyrolysis Procedure. The shale oil samples were stressed at conditions similar to the petroleum refining process known as delayed coking (6). These conditions are 450°C and about 90 psi pressure. Each Thermal stress was conducted in a 1/4 inch o.d. 316 stainless steel tube fitted with a stainless steel valve via a Swagelok connection. The tube, with a weighed amount of sample (approximately 0.1 g), was attached to a vacuum system, cooled to -78°C, and pumped to remove air. The tube was then thawed and the cooling/pumping process repeated. The tubes were heated by inserting them into 9/32-inch holes in a six-inch diameter aluminum block fitted with a temperature controller. [Pg.374]

The stress optical behaviour of glasses is important in glass technology. Due to the different methods of their preparation, glass objects carry their own inherent thermal history. They often retain thermal stresses (more appropriately thermal strains), whieh have to be removed by subjecting them to annealing operation at temperatures close to Tg. Due to thermal stress they exhibit birefringence easily identified imder crossed polars. [Pg.439]
