The specific mass

The specific mass is the mass of unit volume of the solid components of the soil (without pores). It is determined with the use of a pycnometer. [Pg.689]

Mass, Specific, of Constituents of Smokeless Propellant. Literature data on the specific mass of over 100 compds are given in Ref. Kopp s additive rule applies with an error generally less than 1%, eg, 1/d — 2 (nj/pj), where nj is % of constituent, pj is specific mass of constituent, and d is specific mass of propellant Ref P. Tavernier, MP 30, 253-96 (1957) CA 53, 1715-16 (1959)... [Pg.36]

Both the Chen and Gross [48] and the Gallo et al. [49] methods have been applied to eliminating compartments. Both derivation methods are based on the specific mass balance equations for the given model structure. Monte Carlo investigations have demonstrated that both methods provide reasonably accurate and precise estimates of partition coefficients from concentration-time data sets containing error, data one is likely to encounter from in vivo studies. [Pg.94]

Finally, Bakker and Van den Akker calculated local values for the specific mass transfer rate kfl, by estimating local Ay-values from local values of the Kolmogorov time scale /(v/e) and by deriving local values of the specific interfacial area a from local values for bubble size and bubble hold-up. [Pg.205]

The inertia, the opening behavior of a bursting disk or of the movable cover of an explosion device, and its arrangement (horizontal, vertical) can affect the venting efficiency and may result in a higher maximum reduced explosion overpressure inside the protected vessel (Fig. 23-13). This venting efficiency is mainly dependent upon the specific mass of the venting device. [Pg.18]

One approach is to use an enzyme that cleaves the targeted modification from the peptides. A comparison of the peptide map before and after cleavage can reveal modified peptides by identifying the specific mass shift in the spectrum. This approach has been used more systemati-... [Pg.19]

Being black, this atmospheric carbon is a strong absorber of visible radiation. The specific mass absorption coefficient, bap, has been measured to be in the... [Pg.373]

In order to calculate the specific mass transfer rate into the liquid, mass per unit time and unit volume, the specific surface area, a, defined as transfer surface area per volume of liquid, is needed in addition to kL. [Pg.83]

Constraint 1. Particle trajectories are independent of the specific mass values of the particles concerned. [Pg.324]

The change in mean-squared-charge radius is obtained from the isotope shift using standard techniques [HEI74]. For thallium the normal mass shift is approximately 8 MHz between masses and the specific mass shift is smaller than the experimental error. The resulting field shift is proportional, to good approximation, to an electronic factor times 6. For the case of T1 the electronic factor is not directly calculable but should be virtually the same for all isotopes. [Pg.365]

Agar gel is a hygroscopic medium for w < 60% [7], In this range, the equation (10) allows the determination of de from the chemical potential of water given by the desorption isotherm. Assuming that the two-phase structure of the medium is conserved, the coefficient (3 can be expressed by (3 = 1/3 (a I w), where a is the ratio between the specific mass of the water and the specific mass of the solid. This expression is confirmed by experimental tests (fig. 4). The coefficient Kw (fig. 5) was measured for a plate of gel placed in a PEG solution [6]. Dw and De (fig. 6) are deduced from ... [Pg.310]

The same HIC column was used five times with five different samples from the same TPP-extracted 4-mL aliquot. The GFPuv concentration, eluted from the four columns and from five runs through each of the columns, was shown to be equivalent for all four HIC supports. In relation to the removal of BSA from the eluted sample, for the first, second and third runs, the butyl column provided the higher specific masses for the fourth and fifth runs the methyl support increased the specific mass up to 138.35-78.95 pg of GFPuv/mg of BSA. The use of the same HIC columns after five elutions of the TPP-extracted aliquot did not interfere with the evaluation of their performance. [Pg.466]

Since polymers are never completely crystalline, it is of importance to know, how big, in a certain case, the crystalline fraction is. The crystalline volume fraction, specific mass, p, if the densities of the amorphous fraction, pa, and of the crystal, pc, are known, since ... [Pg.78]

Plastics compare more favourably with other materials if the stiffness per unit mass is considered, or the modulus of elasticity divided by the specific mass. This is demonstrated by the right hand side of Figure 7.3 as a result of the lower density of polymers the values are closer to each other an advanced composite now amply exceeds steel ... [Pg.118]

Figures 9.19 and 9.20 present a survey of the mechanical properties of some (unidirectional) composites, in comparison with some other materials. In Figure 9.19 the values of modulus and strength are plotted as such, while in Figure 9.20 these values have been divided by the specific mass. From Figure 9.20 the enormous advantage of composites with respect to stiffness and strength per unit weight, in comparison to metals, is clearly visible. The modem carbon and aramide composites are superior to those based on glass fibres, for the specific stiffness even by a factor between 4 and 5. In a 60 A hr lead-acid battery, sulfuric acid would be consumed during the discharge. The specific mass of the H2S04 solution is 1.25 at a fully charged... [Pg.380]

Many simpler alternatives exist when one can assume that the reaction order is unity. For example, when n = 1, the specific mass is given by m = exp( E(T)), where E may be approximated to a good degree, when TA is large, by... [Pg.481]

Such methods solve the kinetic equation for the specific mass, which is then compared with the experimental value to obtain a residual. The kinetic parameters are then adjusted using a global optimization method to minimize the residual. [Pg.481]

It then follows directly that the specific mass is given to a good degree of approximation by... [Pg.487]

These solutions are of the same overall form as those for the pure random scission case considered above and so it may be shown by a similar argument to that used to obtain Equation 18.21 that the specific mass is given by... [Pg.496]

For calculating the external mass transfer k a value of Sh = 2 can be safely assumed. The specific mass-transfer area per unit of bed volume is p - 6(1-Eb)/dp, in which b is the bed void fraction. The combination of resistances leads to the following expression for the apparent kinetic constant ... [Pg.182]
