Local Estimators

The methods described in Sect. 4.3.1 assume that the intrinsic dimensionality of the data can be accurately estimated at a global scale, that is, using global properties. However, there are numerous algorithms for estimating the intrinsic dimensionality by examining local properties of the data. [Pg.47]

The nearest-neighbour algorithm [19, 20] examines the distances between points at a local scale to estimate the intrinsic dimensionality. The original definition of the nearest-neighbour estimator was given in [19] as [Pg.47]

The main drawback of both of the nearest-neighbour algorithms for intrinsic dimensionality estimation is that they assume the neighbours are locally uniformly distributed. As well as this, they have a drastic tendency to underestimate the intrinsic dimensionality especially when the intrinsic dimensionality is high [20]. [Pg.47]

Another local approach to intrinsic dimensionality estimation is to apply maximum likelihood to the distance between near neighbours [21], The central idea of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is to fix a point x , and then treat the near-neighbours around that point as a homogeneous Poisson process in that neighbourhood. A local intrinsic dimensionality estimator that does not explicitly require a neighbourhood size value is the incising balls method [22], The basic premise of the algorithm is to use a set of balls that incise the manifold, with each of these incising balls containing a set number of data points and a radius.
