The Safety Leadership Team

Part of the commitment from the executive leadership team to improve safety culture would be to declare amnesty. Understanding of the cause and effect of accidental loss will enable line managers to identify all of the accident s causes and not stop the investigation once an unsafe behavior is encountered. Most accidents will have a component where an employee s behavior or actions are questionable, but the focus should now fall on how the system can improve in the future to stop this happening.

Annual safety system audit subteam An audit of the entire safety system or program ought to be conducted annually in the same way the company s financial and quality systems are audited. This should be a management review with some senior leadership and the safety team leadership both involved in conducting the audit. 

World-class safety is dependent on engaging the workforce is proactive workplace safety improvement. No one person can guarantee a safe workplace. A distributed approach to safety leadership, using a formal, team-based structure, will be covered in this chapter. Developing a safety team of passionate about safety people provides both current safety leadership and a path for the development of future business leaders.
