The Next Wave

Like TATP, detection of HMTD is problematic. HMTD, being an amine, does give off a unique odor. The smell emitted by HMTD has been likened to that of fish. As it gets older, the odor gets more predominant and unpleasant. [Pg.63]

This is a chapter written entirely by a chemist named Rhodium (with guest speaker Osmium ). Rhodium is, as far as Strike is concerned, the world s leading underground scientist. Knowledgeable in nearly every aspect of drug chemistry, this chemist has been the savior for many a person that was lost. Here he has contributed some new reactions for your reading pleasure. Radical stuff that you can bet will become the next wave of synthesis protocol. The rest of this chapter is Rhodium s voice.]... [Pg.164]

The Cardiac Cycle. The heart (Eig. lb) performs its function as a pump as a result of a rhythmical spread of a wave of excitation (depolarization) that excites the atrial and ventricular muscle masses to contract sequentially. Maximum pump efficiency occurs when the atrial or ventricular muscle masses contract synchronously (see Eig. 1). The wave of excitation begins with the generation of electrical impulses within the SA node and spreads through the atria. The SA node is referred to as the pacemaker of the heart and exhibits automaticity, ie, it depolarizes and repolarizes spontaneously. The wave then excites sequentially the AV node the bundle of His, ie, the penetrating portion of the AV node the bundle branches, ie, the branching portions of the AV node the terminal Purkinje fibers and finally the ventricular myocardium. After the wave of excitation depolarizes these various stmetures of the heart, repolarization occurs so that each of the stmetures is ready for the next wave of excitation. Until repolarization occurs the stmetures are said to be refractory to excitation. During repolarization of the atria and ventricles, the muscles relax, allowing the chambers of the heart to fill with blood that is to be expelled with the next wave of excitation and resultant contraction. This process repeats itself 60—100 times or beats per minute... [Pg.111]

Terrorists have shown an ability to learn, improvise, and adapt. What only 10 years ago would have been considered too improbable a threat to consider addressing has in many cases become almost routine. Technology and training must take their cue from this trend and attempt to counter the next wave of threats in a proactive fashion. The alternative is to allow the enemy to exploit a weakness that thoughtful anticipation might have been able to eliminate. [Pg.67]

The analysis of the predictive role of TS polymorphisms may be more complex if the 6-bp deletion/insertion (del/ins) polymorphism in the 3 UTR is added for consideration. The 6-bp deletion allele may cause mRNA instability and reduce intratumoral TS mRNA levels (32). The improved study design on the pharmacogenetic effect of TS polymorphisms should include a global evaluation of the combined VNTR, G/C, and 6-bp del/ins polymorphisms (33). The same global analysis applies to other genes, especially when the functional polymorphism is unclear. Haplotypes may be more informative than individual genotypes. Haplotype tag SNPs (htSNPs) based on the international HapMap project may represent the next wave of pharmacogenomic studies. [Pg.357]

It was the work and publications of people such as Howard, McCarrison and Steiner that influenced the next wave of organic pioneers. This second wave brought the organic movement into being, with the establishment of the early associations such as the Rodale Institute in the United States of America (USA), Soil and Health in New Zealand and the Soil Association in the United Kingdom (UK). The term organic was first used in relation to farming by North-bourne (1940) (see above). [Pg.5]

These developments and non-metallocene single site catalysts in general represent the next wave of innovation in polyolefin catalysis which should permit production of polyethylenes with unique properties at lower cost. They will complement, and perhaps even supplant, many of the metallocene single site catalysts commercialized in the 1990s. [Pg.76]

Tsunamis are similar in structure to the waves generated by wind but differ dramatically in size. At the most, a wind driven wave has a wavelength, the distance from the top of one wave to the top of the next wave, of a few hundred yards. The wavelength of a tsunami can be more than 100 miles (160.9 km) long. [Pg.18]

This review will focus on the potential biological impact of two classes of pharmaceuticals prevalent in the environment because of their wide therapeutic use lipid regulators and central nervous system drugs. This should serve as a foundation for future studies on the mechanism of action of these pharmaceuticals in non-target species and as a warning of the next wave of endocrine disrupting substances that we are adding to our environment continuously. [Pg.479]
