The Lighter Side

Unsighdy weeds had overgrown the picturesque duck pond at a company guest house. The company s water treatment specialist was approached for help. He added a herbicide to kill the weeds, but failed to realize that the herbicide also contained a wetting agent. This modification wetted the ducks feathers and the ducks sank. [10] [Pg.49]

Another Good Intentions Project New Tanks Are Destroyed and the Neighborhood Is Disrupted [Pg.49]

There were good intentions when a small chemical terminal in Savannah, Georgia, that supplied the paper and pulp industry decided to change their product mix. Their terminal was to be converted from handling all nonflammable chemicals to storing large quantities of flammable crude sulfate turpentine (CST). Crude sulfate turpentine is an impure form of turpentine produced as a byproduct of the Kraft pulping process. It is classified as a Class IC flammable liquid. [Pg.49]

It is not known whether the good intentions were for better service to the local customers or to improve market share. However, less than three months after flammable materials were introduced, six of their large tanks in the terminal, as well as their office, were destroyed by an explosion and massive fire. As a result of the incident, the company is no longer in business at that location. [Pg.50]

This Savannah, Georgia, terminal was a subsidiary of a company in the United Kingdom. The 6-acre terminal handled liquid chemicals and was situated a little more than a half-mile from the Savannah River. The terminal was located about two miles from the downtown area in Savannah and just northeast of the city limits. There was a residential development of town homes bordering the terminal as well as numerous commercial and industrial facilities and an elementary school in the area. This transfer facility served the paper and pulp industry and provided chemical storage for third-party suppliers. The facility could receive and send chemicals by water, rail, and the highway systems. The six giant tanks were only about three years old when they were destroyed. [11,12] [Pg.50]

On the lighter side, the magnitude of the newton is about the weight of an apple. If we were to grind up that apple and spread it out over one square meter, we would have a pressure nf one pascal, which may give a better feeling for the small size of that particular unit. Your Chairman of the Metrication Committee is approximately 2 meters tall, which was not a requirement, but can serve as a benchmark. [Pg.480]

Finally, a number of studies support that laughter is good medicine, so cultivate both a sense of perspective and a sense of humor by trying to see the lighter sides of even serious situations, and by seeking out sources of entertainment and people who are funny. Some cancer support organizations even hold laughter sessions. [Pg.218]

On the lighter side, a knowledge of the variation of gas solubility with temperature can improve one s performance in a popular recreational sport—fishing. On a hot summer day, an experienced fisherman usually picks a deep spot in the river or lake to cast the bait. Because the oxygen content is greater in the deeper, cooler region, most fish will be found there. [Pg.523]

On the lighter side it is interesting to see how the English language is used and misused throughout the world, sometimes producing some funny results. Let me give you a few examples (modified from an Air France Bulletin of 12/1/89). [Pg.422]

A Back-Pressure Efficiency Factor. Because a gaseous diffusion stage operates with a low-side pressure p which is not negligible with respect to there is also some tendency for the lighter component to effuse preferentiahy back through the barrier. To a first approximation the back-pressure efficiency factor is equal to (1 — r), where ris the pressure ratiopjpj. [Pg.85]

Efficient models of water heaters have thicker insulation, up to three inches thick, on some of the most efficient electric water heaters. Another means to increase efficiency is installing heat traps, or anti—convection devices, on the inlet and outlet pipes. Standard heat traps consist of short pipe nipple containing a small plastic ball. On the inlet side the ball is lighter than water and floats up to seal the inlet pipe. On the outlet side the ball is heavier than water and sinks against the seal. This prevents the heated... [Pg.1216]

The other end is called the tail (lower pressure). If the mobile phase is the lighter (upper) liquid, it should be flown entering the CCC column tail side and exiting from the head side. If the mobile phase is the denser and lower liquid phase, it should be flown in the head-to-tail direction [1]. [Pg.216]

The ait inside the car has more inertia than the helium in the helium balloon. As the car starts forward, the greater inertia of the air causes it to pitch backwards, much like the girl s head. As this air holds to the back of the car, the lighter helium balloon moves forward. A similar effect can be seen when sliding a botde of water on its side across a table. As you accelerate die bottle forward, the water inside the bottle has an inertia that holds it back. Any bubble of air within the bottle thus runs forward in the direction that the bottle was pushed. [Pg.702]
