The Grapevine

Never underestimate the power of the grapevine. Facility-based personnel (at every level) talk to their counterparts at other sites, and both news and opinions about the pilot test will almost certainly be a topic. This suggests that it s wise to pay close attention to how the test is received locally since this can affect smooth installation elsewhere. 

At Upjohn he became Vice President for Research and a member of the Board of Directors. Shortly after arrival he was told to pick one major area ot research for Upjohn and then to do what was necessary to put Upjohn research in the front ranks of pharmaceutical research. He picked steroids as the area to emphasize, and under his direction Upjohn became a major factor in steroidal drugs and a leader in research. His friends at DuPont were not surprised to hear by the grapevine that Schreiber seemed to know all the Upjohn research people by their first names, was a stimulating leader, and answered his own phone.

The grapevine requires particular climatic conditions and, for this reason, grapes can be cultivated only in the temperate zones of the two hemispheres. These zones lie between 50° and 30° of north latitude and from 30° to 40° of south latitude (Fig. 2.1).

It is of particular importance to watch out for any signs of scab and mildew, as well as aphids, red spider mite and rust mite. Young splice or bnd grafts which are starting to sprout can be damaged by the grapevine weevil [Rhynchites conicus]. In some areas of Europe it is absolutely essential to check the nursery for voles before winter dormancy (catch them with traps or fumigate the burrows).

KEEP QUIET This is most important. Don t tell anyone who doesn t need to know about your project. Your victim can hear through the grapevine. You don t know who your drinking buddy might tell.
