The Chemical Society

Though there was initial opposition to the admission of women to every chemical organisation, by the early part of the 20th century, [Pg.62]

The first attempt by a woman (possibly Emily Lloyd, see above) to enter the Society occurred in November 1892. The long controversy started innocuously, as the Minutes of the Council Meeting describes The Secretary having read a letter from Prof. Hartley suggesting the election of a lady as Associate, Prof. Ramsay gave notice that he would move that women be admitted Fellows of the Society. 44 [Pg.63]

The motion, proposed by Ramsay and seconded by William Tilden,45 came the following January,46(a) An amendment was then proposed by William Perkin, Sr.,47 that it was not desirable at that time to amend the bye-laws for the purpose of admitting women. The amendment was defeated by seven votes to six, then curiously the motion itself was defeated by a margin of eight votes to seven. The Secretary commented  [Pg.63]

Does the Charter of the Society contemplate or permit of the admission of women as Fellows and if so what alteration, if any, is required in the Bye-Laws The Council were advised that under the Charter women are admissible as Fellows, but [Pg.63]

Applications PSA cycles are used primarily for purification of wet gases and of hydrogen. One of the earhest applications was the original Skarstrom two-bed cycle (adsorption, countercurrent blowdown, countercurrent purge, and cocurrent repressurization) to diy air stream to less than 1 ppm H9O [Skarstrom, ibid.]. Instrument-air diyers stiU use a PSA cy(de similar to Skarstrom s with activated alumina or sihca gel [Armond, in Townsend, The Propei ties and Applications of Zeolites, The Chemical Society, London, pp. 92-102 (1980)]. [Pg.1542]
