Melamine—Formaldehyde Resins. The most versatile textile-finishing resins are the melamine—formaldehyde resins. They provide wash-and-wear properties to ceUulosic fabrics, and enhance the wash durabiHty of flame-retardant finishes. Butylated melamine —formaldehyde resins of the type used in surface coatings may be used in textile printing-ink formulations. A typical textile melamine resin is the dimethyl ether of trimethylolmelamine [1852-22-8] which can be prepared as follows ... [Pg.330]

They were introduced in the late 1940s for the textile printing of cellulosic fabrics under the trade names Alcian (ICI) and Phthalogen (BAY). Both types resulted in the insolubilisation of copper phthalocyanine or related pigments within the fibre, although the respective application techniques differed considerably. Reactive phthalocyanine dyes in the 1960s superseded these early approaches to the attainment of fast bright blues and turquoises on cellulosic fabrics [63]. [Pg.32]

Tie-dyeing is, like textile printing, selective dyeing. If a piece of wool is bound tightly with cotton strips and then dyed by immersion in a dye bath, only those areas exposed to the dye will take on its color. After the fabric is removed and allowed to dry, and when the strips of cotton are untied, the tightly bound areas show no color from the dye. Omitting dye from... [Pg.29]

In the history of printing on textiles and particularly in the often-opposed contexts of profit and enviromnental concern, a question rarely asked is why print on textiles Print is rarely necessary for the function of the fabric however, the answer might simply be that we print because we can, and that these skills developed because print adds... [Pg.154]
