Term elimination

A reaction in which atoms or molecules are taken up by a multiple bond is described as addition. The converse of addition—i.e., the removal of groups with the formation of a double bond, is termed elimination. When water is added to an alkene (la), a proton is first transferred to the alkene. The unstable carbenium cation that occurs as an intermediate initially takes up water (not shown), before the separation of a proton produces alco-... [Pg.14]

The second and third terms handle two-body collisions while the fourth term is related to the three-body collision. The term second-order in R in the Fock expansion is also known, and Myers, et a/. [12] have verified that this term eliminates the discontinuity in the local energy at the origin. This article also contains an analysis of the behavior of the wave function in the vicinity of these singular points. [Pg.373]

There is a rich literature for the determination of these symmetry families [31], and this might be of use in the back-translation problem. In any case, for structural unidentifiability caused by conserved moieties the back-translation may be formulated by simple linear combinations [3, 6]. Another special case where improved solutions of the back-translation problem are possible is term elimination and lumping [6] examples of both these cases in the model for insulin signaling are provided in the next section. First, however, we must consider the back-translation problem in the example introduced above. [Pg.131]

Near-infrared (NIR) spectra of water-methanol mixtures are examined to demonstrate the fundamental aspects of calibration. These spectra are used because they present unique challenges to calibration. Another reference NIR data set is also briefly evaluated. The reader should remember that the information presented is generic and applies to all calibration situations, not just spectroscopic data. Additionally, for discussion purposes, the quantitative information for the target analyte will be concentration. However, other chemical or physical properties can also be modeled. Throughout this chapter, unless noted otherwise as in Sections 5.3 and 5.4, it will be assumed that the described models have had the intercept term eliminated. The easiest way to accomplish this is to mean-center the data. [Pg.107]

We have [eft detailed discussion of the formation of alkenes till this chapter, but we used the term elimination in Chapters 12 and 14 to describe the loss of a leaving group from a tetrahedral intermediate. For example, the final steps of the acid-catalysed ester hydrolysis shown below involve El elimination of ROH to leave a double bond C=0 rather than C=C. [Pg.479]

Some students and instructors find it easier to write out the solution to a problem so that units in the denominator of each succeeding term eliminate the units in the numerator of the preceding one until the units of the answer are obtained. This method has been referred to as the factor-label method, dimensional analysis, or the picket fence method. For instance, in Example 4-2, the units of the answer are g Na" and the units given are g Na2S04. Thus, we can write... [Pg.76]

Because of these confounding factors, results of breath tests for carbon disulfide exposure do not correlate well with its environmental levels. However, one might be able to detect carbon disulfide exposure more reliably if measurements of carbon disulfide were made during a second slower elimination phase and if a more sensitive detection technique were used. A quadrupole mass spectrometer makes the measurement of carbon disulfide in exhaled breath much more sensitive, detecting exposure levels as low as 1 ppm. In an investigation by Campbell et al. (1985), the short-term elimination of carbon disulfide was studied measuring uptake that had taken place 1-2 hours before the test. Carbon disulfide levels in the breath were found to fluctuate, but the value of next-day tests measuring the slower elimination phase of carbon disulfide by the breath should be explored. Nevertheless, the use of exhaled carbon disulfide remains an equivocal biomarker of exposure. [Pg.100]

They are such that R and ai are constant (except for the short period terms eliminated by the averaging and for contributions of higher orders). Constant R s mean semi-major axes and eccentricities constant in these solutions o and 02 constant mean that Aw = ai — <72 is constant - that is, the periapses are moving with same velocities so that their mutual separation do not vary. This frozen relative state in resonant systems is known as Apsidal corotation. [Pg.278]

Each block of 8 experiments can be analysed separately as we saw for the extrusion-spheronization example, and aliasing terms eliminated by combining pairs of estimates. We examine further the extrusion-spheronization example. Since the overall design 2 design was of resolution IV this resulted in certain first-order interaction terms being confounded. We may want to clarify the position with respect to the confounded terms in the model. The blocks are ... [Pg.147]

The amount of active drug is reduced by excretion and metabolism, processes that are included in the term "elimination. The answer is (B). [Pg.10]

All these examples are olefin-forming processes and many organic chemists associate the term elimination reactions predominantly with 1,2-elimination. This is not surprising as the investigation of the Hofmann elimination represented the first kinetic study of elimination reactions. ... [Pg.163]

All of the terms in these models are significant, as we can see from the relatively small sizes of their respective standard errors. Each additional term eliminates 1 degree of freedom from the residuals but this does not worsen the models — judging by the ANOVA results, they are progressively improving. The cubic model, for example, has MSg/MSr = 3214.15, and explains 99.78% of the total variation. With these numbers, we would hardly bother about finding a better model. When we look at the... [Pg.233]

Metabolism, excretion, and diffusive loss, collectively termed elimination, are processes that can decrease tissue concentrations of parent PAHs. Studies with fish show that parent LPAHs can be eliminated through the gills. [Pg.105]

The next step in the development and implementation of the MR ccsd method is to include the quadratic terms and, in general, non-linear terms. Here, we should mention the orthogonally spin-adapted MR ccsD-1, mr ccsd-2 and MR ccsd-3 approximations developed by Paldus et al. [105] and tested for the H4 model system. The first two approximations were designed just for testing purposes in order to better assess the importance of various non-linear terms. All three approximations are extensive. They differ by the presence of quadratic and bi-linear terms in the direct component, as well as in the coupling terms in the equation for cluster amplitudes (4.87). To be more precise, in addition to absolute and linear terms, the MR ccsd- 1 method contains the quadratic term involved in the direct term the MR ccsd-2 method contains the quadratic term involved in both the direct component, as well as in the coupling terms, and, finally, the MR ccsd-3 method represents a fully quadratic MR ccsd approximation which considers all bi-linear terms. The main conclusions to be drawn from these studies are that the inclusion of quadratic terms eliminates the singular behaviour of the linear mr ccsd approximation, mr l-ccsd, (even at the mr ccsd- 1 level) and that the inclusion of bi-linear components usually further improves the results. [Pg.153]

What does this approach—adopting a long-term elimination vision for road crash fatalities and serious injuries—require of decision makers in the interim period wishing to progress toward the long-term goal ... [Pg.84]

Surprisingly, if the stoichiometry is constant and there are no liquid slugs out of the cell, we can cancel out iAJ2F from each term, eliminating current from the overall gas-phase water balance. This is because the water generation and the stoichiometry both scale direcdy with current. For the general case with liquid water slugs, we can show that in steady state... [Pg.304]
