The tensile properties of isotactic polypropylene materials reinforced with continuous nylon fibers were measured. Less than 10 vol % of the fibers leads to an increased yield strength and yield elongation. As little as 3 vol % of the nylon fibers increased the elongation at necking from 10 to 20%. This retarded necking arises from the fiber-matrix debonding which delocalizes the microscopic yielding processes. [Pg.367]

The physical properties of polypropylene, poly(ethylene terephthalate), and polyimide are greatly influenced by orientation of the polymer. Polypropylene and poly(ethylene terephthalate) become highly crystallized upon stretching. Oriented, crystalline poly(ethylene terephthalate), for example, has significantly higher modulus, tensile strength, and continuous use temperature than its extruded, unoriented analog (see Table II). [Pg.528]

The effect of wood species on the wood-polymer interface and on properties of WPCs has received little attention in the literature. Stark and Berger [13] evaluated the effect of ponderosa pine, loblolly pine, maple, or oak on the mechanical properties of polypropylene WPCs. In general, WPCs made with maple or oak exhibit slightly better tensile and flexural properties and heat deflection temperatures than either of the pines. Composites elaborated with coconut flber and polyurethanes have shown good results. Coconut flber acts as reinforcement and active part of the matrix system, improving the interface... [Pg.495]

Preliminary measurements of mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) - polycarbonate (PC) blends revealed that the blends containing about 10 wt.% PP maintain several properties at the level of pure PC. Some of the properties (e.g. tensile yield, Young s modulus or impact strength) of these blends are even higher than those of pure PC We have recently measured the electrical... [Pg.157]

The objective of this work was to use rice straw pulp cellulose fiber to prepare environmental-friendly rice straw fibril and fibril aggregates (RSF) and evaluate the fibril and fibril aggregates as a novel reinforcing material to compound polypropylene (PP)/ RSF nanocomposite. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), laser diameter instrument (LDl) were used to evaluate the characteristics of RSF. The RSF/PP nanocomposite was prepared by novel extrusion process. The interface compatibility and tensile properties of nanocomposite were investigated by FTIR and tensile test, respectively. [Pg.330]
