Technology Emergencies

These emergencies include any interruption or loss of a utility service, power source, life-support system, information system, or equipment needed to keep the business in operation. Identify all critical operations, including electric power, gas, water, hydraulics, compressed air, municipal and internal sewer systems, and wastewater treatment services. Also consider security and alarm systems, elevators, lighting, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning systems, and electrical distribution systems. Evaluate transportation systems, including air, highways, railroads, and waterways. Determine the impact of service disruption. [Pg.162]

In the early 1970s, the first companies to apply low cost, mass production techniques to photovoltaics, a technology that had previously been considered an exotic aerospace technology, emerged. These techniques included the use of electroplated and screen printed metal paste electrical conductors, reflow soldered ribbon interconnects, and by 1977, low cost, automobile windshield-style, laminated module constmction. Such processes benefitted from a substantial existing industrial infrastmcture, and have become virtually ubiquitous in the present PV industry. [Pg.470]

The Wiley Series in Polymer Science aims to cover topics in polymer science where significant advances have been made over the past decade. Key features of the series will be developing areas and new frontiers in polymer science and technology. Emerging fields with strong growth potential for the twenty-first century such as nanotechnology, photopolymers, electro-optic polymers etc. will be covered. Additionally, those polymer classes in which important new members have appeared in recent years will be revisited to provide a comprehensive update. [Pg.672]

The ideal scenario would be to have the power of a traditional IR analyzer but with the cost and simplicity of a simple filter device, or even better to reduce the size down to that of a sensor (such as the spectral detector mentioned earlier) or a simple handheld device. This is not far-fetched, and with technologies emerging from the telecommunications industry, the life science industry and even nanotechnology, there can be a transition into analyzer opportunities for the future. There is definitely room for a paradigm shift, with the understanding that if an analyzer becomes simpler and less expensive to implement then the role of analyzers/sensor can expand dramatically. With part of this comes the phrase good enough is OK - there is no need for the ultimate in versatility or sophistication. Bottom line is that even in process instrumentation, simple is beautiful. [Pg.192]

Designing new chemicals and substances is in its infancy, but its maturation, should this occur, would affect almost every aspect of technology and society. Everything from medicine to construction requires substances having the properties necessary to perform their function. New materials are the crucible from which new technologies emerge an engineer cannot build a novel device without the appropriate materials. [Pg.28]

While each of these milestones brought forth a renewed interest in chemical weed control and led to more research in the field, the use of chemicals for selective weed control in crops was very limited and not very successful until the discovery and development of 2,4-D, MCPA, and other phenoxyacetic acid herbicides in the 1940s. These compounds were the first truly selective herbicides that could reliably kill broadleaf weeds in cereal crops, including com, and they quickly developed widespread popularity and use after World War II. With this major milestone, new application technology emerged, including the low-volume sprayer, and new herbicide formulations were developed. [Pg.68]

The practical implementation of the TCC reactor imposes several technical problems (as discussed earlier), and consequently the simulated moving-bed (SMB) technology emerged. Movement of the solid is simulated by periodically switching the inlet and outlet ports in the direction of the liquid flow, as shown in Fig. 6.5. [Pg.187]
