Technology acid rain

Air, soil, and water are vital to life on this planet. We mnst protect these resonrces and nse them wisely— onr snrvival as a species depends on them. Despite recent impressive strides in improving the environment, evidence is overwhelming that more effective action mnst be taken to address snch critical issnes as acid rain, hazardons waste disposal, hazardous waste landfills, and groundwater contamination. It is also vital that we assess realistically the potential health and enviromnental impacts of emerging chemical products and technologies. The problems are clearly complex and demand a broad array of new research initiatives.

Biomass resources are a major component of strategies to mitigate global climate change. Plant growth recycles C02 from the atmosphere, and the use of biomass resources for energy and chemicals results in low net emissions of carbon dioxide. Since the emissions of NOx and SOx from biomass facilities are also typically low, it is a technology that helps to reduce acid rain.

Acid rain has been reduced with the introduction of technologies that remove the sulfur from the smokestack gases of coal-burning power plants. However, sulfur is present in other fossil fuels, and is introduced into the atmosphere by the exhausts from cars, trucks, and buses. Acid rain is still part of the overall problem of air pollution. 

In recent years, much political and environmental attention has been paid to the idea of clean coal technology. Coal is a cheap and relatively available source of energy, but the smoke from its burning creates enormous amounts of air pollution, as well as acid rain.
